Hi guys,

Does anyone know why my system will BSOD when 4 cores are enabled on certain games? Games such as BF4 and Planetside will crash almost instantly with 4 cores enabled but run with no problem using 2 cores. Then there's games that run perfectly fine with 4 cores enabled i.e Skyrim, Tomb Raider, World of Warcraft.

Obviously I can't have 2 cores enabled all the time, I paid for 4 cores and I'd rather have all 4 enabled but does anyone know how to do so without compromising the stability on games that utilise all 4 cores?

Anyone that can help me with this problem will save me a lot of stress, I feel like pulling my hair out. It's been 5 days and I've only now just figured out changing to 2 cores helps alleviate my problem.

Thanks in advance,

Sco

is it just game crashes?

do you BSOD? what bsod error you get x101 or x124

or does the system shut down or freeze up?

most likely your cpu ring bus is causing the instability.

please post your system specs \ settings

No overclocking since I have restored the BIOS back to default settings as I thought that was causing the instability. Temps are 30-40 degrees idle and at most 60 degrees on full load.

are you using a gigabyte board?

Yes Prokon, it's mainly when using games such as BF4 and Planetside 2. It also locks up upon starting Cinebench.

Yes, i'd say 99% it's BSOD, there has been the odd time the system restarts on Planetside 2 and there was a BSOD upon going back into the desktop. Event viewer says:

0x8000000000000002

System freezes for 10-20 seconds then goes to BSOD only when using the games I've mentioned, games I believe which use all 4 cores seem to cause this issue.

if you have installed the gigabyte overclocking software---promptly uninstall it and clear cmos

increase your cpu ring voltage or drop the ring multiplier down to x34

good chance your ring bus will turbo up to x40 under load, common on gigabyte boards

Now that you mention it, I did install all the motherboard drivers and the software that came with the motherboard immediately after installing Windows.

As a noob when it comes to cpu ring voltage and overcloking in general, can you recommend a value that might help with stability?

i would first try to manually set the uncore ratio at x34 and leave the voltage at stock.

the gigabyte software suite has caused grief for many people including myself

please also tell us what ram you are using, what is the frequency and voltage of the ram set to?

The software that came with my G1 Sniper didn't actually install any proprietary Gigabyte software, such as the Gigabyte App Centre, it came preloaded with recommended chipset drivers i.e. Intel® Management Engine Software, Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver which I did install. I never installed anything else from the disc.

I'm so grateful at even the suggestion you've made ProKoN, it's been a very frustrating few days trying to figure out where this BSOD was coming from. Hopefully this may be light at the end of tunnel.

Try upping the vcore

That was one of the first things I tried out, it never worked.

Crap! Enabled 4 cores but there's only 2 core still showing in HW monitor!

Any ideas dude?

double check in task manager for accuracy. clear cmos if unsure

use intel xtu to monitor vitals

I managed to get all 4 cores up and running and I've done what you suggested and manually set the Uncore ratio at x34. Still crashing even at x40...

try

uncore x30-x34

vrin 1.9V

ring voltage- 1.2V

set ram at 1333mhz at 1.5V to diagnose cpu.

here are the three most common causes

unstable cpu -> run the cpu stress test located in xtu to rule this out

unstable memory or defective module -> run memtest +86 to rule this out

unstable videocard driver -> perform clean install of video card driver preferably the latest but it is ok to try previous iterations

I'm using Windows 8 and it will always say one of two things. Clock_watchdog_timeout or Machine_Check_Excpetion.

It's really frustrating that 2 cores work perfectly but as soon as I go to 4 it goes kaput! If my system can run fine on 2 cores doesn't that rue out the RAM and GPU?

yes i think its kinda of weird two cores are stable, but 4 cores are not. its pretty unlikely your chip is faulty but it is possible.

its difficult to speculate so its pertinent you isolate each variable one by one.

Seems to me that there is something wrong with the motherboard.

I would just RMA the board.

Its very unlikely, that your cpu is faulty, i would rma the board in the first place. you could try a bios update, or disabling all power saving feutures and LLC, But normaly you should not have any issues out of the box.. so yea

Or your HDD is dying.
