Hi guys!

So ive been having this issue for about 2 years and ive just been turning my pc on my jumping it with a piece of metal or putting it in sleep.

This is my first and only computer ive only built(for gaming purposes)

So basically the power switch cable doesnt seem to work (that or im plugging it in wrong) i was hoping you guys could help me. So ill be posting pictures of how im doing things and what ive done already. Note this case is the H500i nzxt.

so the first photos show how I connected the front panel to the cables that are the led and power switch.

the video that i attached shows that after i plug in the power switch, my pc turns on for a moment before turning back off, and that the power button just doesn’t work(and they are definitely connected). However, when i jump start the pc with my own random metal itll turn on permanently just fine. Also if i plug in the HDD it works, so there definitely is power being transmitted between the cables to the button.

im hoping its not a faulty cable and just my novice pc building skills.

any help would be nice so thanks. Also hope the video is clear.

im plugging the power sw cable to the top right two metal things. Thats also how i jump start the pc

Sounds like a short in the wire / button. What if you connect the cable directly to the board without the breakout cable from NZXT? Most boards allow to just attach the whole block instead of the individual wires.

Ive tried just plugging in the front panel, and that also doesnt work. Maybe im plugging it into the wrong part?

this is a asrock tomahawk b450 micro atx mb to add.

That's not Tomahawk, Tomahawk is MSI.
From what can be seen in the vid, the MB is most probably Asrock B450m Pro4.
Based on it's manual, you plugged it in correctly.

Maybe something in the case's switch PCB is shorted.

Power button works by simply shorting the 2 pins.

Yeah its asrock my bad its the b450 pro4 micro atx as you said. I just said tomohawk for some reason. And yeah it looks like im plugging it in correctly, ive seen this exact depiction your showing me. So when i plug in the front panel it all turns on for a moment, then switches off, so it does seem as if its being shorted. Is there any fix for this? Maybe something else ive plugged in is wrong? Or was i just unlucky, and got a faulty switch?

If your PC turns on and running fine after you turn it on using a metal object, I don't think so.
Maybe the micro switch under the power button broken or something.

Does this happen ever since you got that PC, or ?

Yeah i was starting to think its the button. Here ill just throw in this video of me plugging in the front panel, again it turns on automatically when i plug it in then has that loud fuse sound and turns off. Pressing the power button does not turn it on.

Its really not a huge deal, because i can just turn it on with my metal thing and put it in sleep mode. But it just sucks, and shows my luck.

also yes, ive been using the pc like this for the past 2 years. I tried fitting it in different ways and just gave up.

A meter would pretty quickly verify if that switch is bad. Without a meter, to verify, it seems highly likely the switch is bad. It seems like your best option (since your case does not have a reset button) is to add another switch some where. Plenty of options, pretty much all your need is a momentary switch.

Well, either :
The dupont connector inside the housing somehow shorted.
The switch somehow broke
Or a trace on the PCB shorted.

Hard to tell what if it's on the PCB side without pulling out the PCB and checking directly.

Meanwhile you can buy one of these and use it as a workaround, better than going in with a metal object to turn your PC on every single time.

Cheap and easy to make too, especially if you know very basic soldering.

Just to make sure, i built this computer a while back off of a youtube video and some research. So my terminology is a little lame, what is the pcb?and it wouldnt happen to have to do with this cable that i left hanging out the back? It does seem to be connected near the power button so this may very well be the problem cable, its like the only thing i left unplugged.

ill upload some pics hopefully this is the noob mistake.

See that green board ? That's a PCB. Printed Circuit Board
Your motherboard square board is a PCB, as well as your GPU.
It's not a PC term. Don't worry.

That cable you are holding is a USB-C A-key connector, if your motherboard have a USB-C internal connector, you plug that to it, so your front panel USB-C port can be used.

And no, it doesn't have anything to do with power button/reset button/anything else on front panel.
