Hey guys.

I am getting my Steam Deck soon, most likely within the next week.

I am not looking to play any AAA titles (I have a decent gaming machine for that), but I am more like looking for lighter titles that are just relaxing fun on the couch. 😉
Stuff I already lined up for myself to play/replay:

  • Stardew Valley
  • Portal 2
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Ark
  • Valheim
  • Risk of Rain 1 and 2
  • Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (wanna try that with external controllers on a TV)
  • Gang  Beasts
  • Screencheat
  • Monkey Island games (actually only ever played the first one as a kid in the 90s and now I would like to see mroe)
  • RPCS3 Demon's Souls, PCSX2 NFS:Underground, Ratchet&Clank and more Emulation

Also, wouldn't it be a good idea to make a pinned thread with games that are good on deck here?

Kinda like a list and when you click on the title, it will bring you to the corresponding reply where someone outlines why they think it is good on the Deck and how the performance is, what bugs to expect, etc.

https://www.protondb.com/explore is the `official-unofficial` game database for proton, and has a steamdeck section for each game; for example they have 9/10 positive reports for Risk of Rain 2.

Thank you. That is quite helpful.

I was more so looking for recommendations, if you know what I mean. Compatibility is one thing, but e.g. Terraria works with a controller, but I don't think the controls are great. Just because it runs with all features, does not mean it is a great experience, right? I watched a bunch of youtube videos and they often suggested AAA titles or weird stuff. It is always along the lines of "12 best games on Steam Deck" and at least half barely run and of the rest, most are best played with mouse and keyboard and just support a controller, while significantly degrading the experience.

Yeah, I know that one, I've been tied to my PS3 controller for years. Two things, anything that works well on a PS or Xbox is going to translate well to a PC with a controller (so by extension I assume a steamdeck). The best experiences I have are with Sony's "PS only" games that get ported to PC after a year or so, so Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War for instance, but anything that "has controllers in mind" from the offset is a good bet, such as the Dark Souls series.

There is also a "Steam Deck Compatability" section in the Steam Store now, gives you a few hints on feedback received as far as I can tell, see below...image.png.108588551145e118ba8c0a1ebdb8cfb5.png

Okay...so this blew my mind...but the original Tomb Raider games work on SteamDeck. You have to use a community controller layout, but it works.

My current SteamDeck library is:

- Final Fantasy 1-6 (and X/X-2 remaster). I have played these so often I'm able to dip in and out casually.

- Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy. Really good for casual gaming session.

- Kingdom/Kingdom New Lands/Kingdom Two Crowns. Brilliant survival village building game series that's nice and casual and able to be picked up and put down.

-Toybox Turbos. Great little toy racing game. Brill art style. Single race runs about 3 minutes or so. Nice balance of chill/frustrating

- Sonic Mania

Biggest thing I will say is that even 'Great on Deck' games don't always come with great control systems. If a game is supported on the Deck, a really good recommendation is to look at the controller options from the community.

Go to the game in your library. Click the controller icon. Tap 'current layout'. Tap 'community layouts' and choose one to try out. The 'official' control layouts are in my experience pretty bad. Worse still, if a community layout is required the game can often be marked as unplayable. So angry! This was how I got Tomb Raider (1996) game working despite being listed as 'Unsupported'.

I used to work as a tech and consultant, now I've become an odd person who plays dress-up and calls themselves a theatre maker.

Some games that i considered "chill", works great on controller and not too heavy on the graphic. 🤔

I don't have SteamDeck though, SteamDB users show these are all playable on SD.

I would like to add Mafia 2 into the list, but according to ProtonDB users Y2K launcher cockblock you from playing the game unless you done some tinkering. No such problem with the original Mafia 2 but Y2K delisted the game from Steam so user can only buy the new Definitive Edition.

Not sure how they would work on SteamDeck but I play WoW and the most recent Need For Speed on linux. WoW through Lutris and NFS through Steam Proton. Both work great though NFS did give me a few issues getting my controller working. Those are what i play fairly regularly but I've had Stardew Valley, Age of Darkness: final stand, Stories: The Path of Destinies, both portals, and Darkest Dungeon running great in the last few months.
