PCIe 3.0 x4 NVME Drive in PCIe 4.0x1 Slot

It would run at PCIe 3.0

The slowest link determines the speed. It doesn't matter if your motherboard supports PCIe 4.0, if the NVMe only supports PCIe 3.0. It'll not magically speak the newer protocol. So the motherboard will fall back to PCIe 3.0.

I'm trying to remember how the speed negotiation works for PCIe.  My motherboard has 3 PCIe 4.0 x1 slots.  If I adapted a PCIe 3.0 x4 NVME drive to one of these (say, if I replaced my second NVME drive, and wanted to reuse my old drive somehow), would it simply have the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 x1, or would it negotiate it down to PCIe 3.0 x1?

A NVMe on pcie3 x1 will have its bandwidth cut by 3/4 and will perform no better than a SATA SSD, it's not a sensible setup
