I noticed my old laptop was running slow and I decided to reinstall windows. Everything seemed to go fine until I went to boot the system back on after the install.  It's taking even longer to boot and when it does and I sign in it goes to a black screen. I can control+alt+delete and pull up the task manager but it doesn't show much. I am at a loss.

Hi there! Just for clarification, what version of Windows did you reinstall? Assuming you are running Windows 10, I recommend reinstalling Windows while selecting the option for a full disc-wipe rather than the option to keep all your files (but backup those files somewere else beforehand). If you did the full disc-wipe, then try to install the relevant drivers and firmware updates if you can get to open the Start menu and see the Settings display. If you can't see anything on the screen then try to boot up Windows in Safe Mode from the login screen by holding the Shift key and choosing the restart option, which will take you to a new menu to start Safe Mode. Here is a link to in-depth instructions on how to do it. If your laptop boots into the desktop environment successfully in Safe Mode, then it must be a problem with the laptop's firmware or drivers being out of date. If that doesn't work, then just try installing the same version of Windows the leptop previously had from a USB image.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions please quote me a reply and I'll try to get to you as soon as I can.

Cheers! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Windows 10 and I did use a recovery option to keep my files. And I have tried the shift+restart but for some reason it goes black then just shuts down.  I have Windows installed on my 120gb ssd but I am thinking maybe my storage hdd took a crap? I'll take it out and try again

It may be the case, then, that the recovery option has messed up something badly with the operating system. If you can, backup all the data you have on the drive and reinstall Windows from a USB image. If you are unable to access the contents of the drive directly, then try to plug it into a desktop's SATA/M.2 slot to backup the data to a separate storage medium.

Good luck! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

Thank you so much. The calm responses to my issue helped me keep a cool head. The update is: my son was playing Minecraft and "accidently  dropped the laptop" the hard drive is toast.. but the ssd is still good. After replacing both drives with a 1 tb ssd and reinstalling all seems good. Luckily all of the important stuff is on my computer and the cloud. He now has to wait for all of his games etc. To download again so I do believe he will be more careful  lmao

That's great! For the problem, not so great for the hard drive. Glad you got the problem solved. You can mark the thread as solved to let the others know the issue is resolved.

Good luck and I hope the new drive has a better time than the hard drive!
