I've been thinking about buying some new parts for my PC. I want to buy a new case, mobo, psu and cpu cooler.

I have tried to do some research before, and I keep seeing, that it is best if I reinstall windows when swapping mobo. Should I do that?
And what about the old drivers that I have installed? should I install new ones, and do the old ones get uninstalled when I install new ones?

There aren't many situations where is makes sense to swap out the motherboard, but not the CPU. Did you just forget to add that to your list?

To answer your question, it is best to reinstall Windows when changing to a very different platform, but it isn't clear that that is what you are doing.

I always recommend reinstalling Windows when changing motherboard and/or CPU. Chances are that the new motherboard won't even boot from the old install because it doesn't detect the Windows bootloader yet.

If you reinstall Windows you're formatting the drive, which also deletes all drivers. You should download new ones from the support page of your GPU and motherboard.

May I ask why you want a new mobo? The other stuff I get, but for the most part swapping motherboards and not the CPU doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in 99% of situations.

Anyway, if you do actually need to swap the board, a windows reinstall is somewhat optional. If you run into driver issues, then yeah reinstall, but if you don't notice anything like that then I wouldn't bother.

I want to buy a new mobo, because my current pc is a prebuilt one, that i've owned for about a year and I want to make the pc my own, by changing these parts :S

I mean, it still likely makes more sense (depending on what is in the prebuilt) to just upgrade the CPU at the same time and flip the mobo and CPU as a combo. Mobo/CPU combos sell a lot faster than just motherboards on their own, especially prebuilt boards.

I have a i7 10700k and gtx 1080 and its not really in my budget to upgrade those parts yet

GPU doesn't need to be upgraded, but odds are given the price of Z490 boards it will actually be a bit cheaper to get a B660-A Pro and an i5 12400F then flipping your current stuff, getting overall better performance in the process.

You shouldn't buy a new motherboard for that 10700K unless there is a specific reason to do so. "Because I want to" is not a good reason, but it's your money...

Yea, I get that. With my current prebuilt I cant do anything in the bios, so I cant enable XMP and stuff like that, and honestly, I really love building pcs and messing with electronics so all these things i've mentioned are not need to have, but nice to have/want to have
