Xbox 360 wired controller/USB problems. Help?

Go to solution Solved by Gronnie,

In device manager, you need to right click on it, select "Update driver software"....Select  "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", select  "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class", grab whatever the newest driver is underneath there.

If that doesn't work and I believe you said you already installed the Xbox wired controller drivers that you download from their website, I believe there is a list of all your installed drivers somewhere that it should be listed under.

I'm trying to connect my Xbox controller to my desktop PC but it wont recognize it as a xbox controller and cannot download the drivers for it via Windows Update.
I Installed the official drivers for it from the microsoft website but still the PC won't recognize the controller and it is left blinking, helpless and unfunctional.
In the Device Manager the Controller is simply named "Controller" under the section "Other devices", Error code 28.
Switching to another USB does not work, I've tried all of them and the same problem persists.
Connecting the controller to my laptop the controller works fine, the laptop even installs the drivers for it.

My suspicion is that my USB ports are the problem as sometimes when i disconnect my mouse and reconnect it, it wont work either. Only a system restart solves this problem.
And yes I have tried restarting my system and reinstalling the drivers in various ways.

  • 8 months later...

Wanted to add a late thank you.. New x99 board and couldn't figure out why the plug-n-play that worked on my x58 wasn't doing it. Thanks again!
