What are the major contributors to what makes a game use a lot of VRAM?

 

Meaning, why do specific games require more VRAM than others?

 

Yes resolution demands more VRAM but what is it about a game that requires more VRAM than another game?

 

For example, Sniper Elite 5 is one of the latest games to EAT VRAM.

 

Yet Assassins Creed Valhalla, a huge open world game, barely requires much VRAM.

Textures can be coarse or fine. The finer the texture, the larger the VRAM usage.

So you're saying the textures in Sniper Elite 5 are finer than the textures in Assassins Creed Valhalla?

Sniper elite 5 has a vram leakage so it'll probably use most or all of it until it gets patched

What about DOOM Eternal or Watch Dogs Legion or the dozens of other games pushing tons of VRAM?

There has to be something about games that use more VRAM than others that is causing more VRAM usage. I used to think that it's simply newer technology or newer game engines but I'm not sure of the specific thing.

Mmmm if I had to guess it's probably how the game designers block out their games. Like if they choose to render the whole map when the player spawns on the map or if it chunks it out to where it renders in when it comes in view. This would probably effect how much textures would have to be stored in the gpus vram ie the spike in usage. Although take this with a grain of salt because that's my best guess.
