Looking to Upgrade

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Apex Legends, Work, Minecraft (shaders), Valorant, R6 Siege 

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

 

I currently have a PC that is 3-4 years old, and I am looking to upgrade. My current Parts list:

Motherboard: MSI Gaming Pro Carbon

PSU: EVGA 850+ Gold (Modular)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X (8-Core)

GPU: ASUS GTX 1080

RAM: 2x8 3200Mz

Cooler: Corsair H100i (AIO)

Drives: 500G Samsung SSD and 1TB Samsung M.2 Nvme

 

Looking to upgrade GPU, and CPU (along with CPU cooler) if possible, or just the one bottlenecking my PC the most.

What is the issue here?   That's a great 1080p machine right there, or even a good 1440p machine with a few settings tweaks.

 

Minecraft shaders are probably your biggest issue but they are terribly unoptimized.  I wouldn't upgrade for them at all.  For the other games, your machine should run them just fine at 1080p.

 

I'd save up a year or two and enjoy this one a bit longer.

I want to upgrade to 1440p, and push shaders/ framerates. I also want to aim for slowly upgrading my parts rather than all at the same time. Example: Rather than having to upgrade all my parts in 2-3 years, I'd rather spread out that cost and buy 1 or 2 parts now and slowly work on replacing the rest.

Then I'd lose the CPU. It's slower than anything out today, so look at the 12500K and 12700F/K.  12700F for example is only a bit over $300 and with a motherboard is $450 or so.  

Save up a bit after that and get a 6700XT or 3070 or 3080 depending on budget and the refresh rate you want to hit at 1440p. .

What's the chipset of the board? Best case scenario you can bios update the board with a new cpu. worst case scenario, you would have to buy a new board.

That plus a gpu like a 6700xt would be my recommendation

Depending on what motherboard he has, I thin it's more sensible for him to look at upgrading AM4 till end of life. Gets the best CPU his ZEN motherboard can support and later down the line he can upgrade motherboard and CPU again if he has to.

Definitely  if that motherboard will support newer CPUs, that's a great idea.  I didn't realize the range of AMD motherboards, from the 1700x to a 5600x as referenced by Jeppes?

That's why finding out what motherboard he has is important. If he has A320 he'll be stuck with Zen+ max upgrade, which most likely won't be worth it.

If he has a B350/X370 motherboard if he gets lucky with motherboard support, he could upgrade to a Zen 2 CPU which could be worth it.

If by some miracle he has a B450/X470 motherboard and he gets lucky with bios support, he can upgrade to Zen 3 which I would definitely recommend he does.

Even if he has the x370, it'll support according to MSI page... so he should be in a good place for a 5600x.
