I’ve been looking at used RX 580 8GB cards for 140 USD and a new 6500XT for 180. Which would be a better option for slotting into an old workstation, or are there any better options on the gpu for the price range

Rx580 as I doubt your old workstation is pcie gen 4, which the 6500XT needs to function at full capacity.  Does your PSU have any extra pcie connectors coming from it? If not, you'll need a new power supply as well.  What brand and model is your old workstation?

The PSU prob dosen't have pcie cables, I was planning on using a SATA to PCIE cable to power it. The workstation I'm planning on getting is a HP Z230 with a I7 4770, 16GB of DDR3, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD and a 600W PSU
