Why do you want Windows XP? Do you want to use it in your notebook as your main OS?

A 64bit CPU can run 32 bit software with no problem you can install windows XP on the notebook.

However many many notebook drivers don't have support for older OS, meaning that you might not get to work properly your sound, wifi, touchpad, etc.

Use virtual box, and download windows xp mode off microsofts website. EExtract it using 7-zip, inside you will find a virtual disk image. Rename to .vdk and mount the vdk in virtualbox. You could even use the external hdd if you wanted to. Ill get a link with more detail for you.
