RAM load unusually high

Go to solution Solved by Bennyboy1993,

If you're running Windows 8.1, there is a Memory dump issue, that nothing leaves your RAM, it just fills it up, and has to be restarted to clear it. No prcesses actually show as using much, but in the overall, it shows at nearly fully used up 85-99%. This is an intermittent problem, and microsoft are putting a fix together

Hi guys

I'm not sure whether or not this would have to go into the MoBo/RAM section or here.

So my problem is, that I have a 4 Month old PC with 16GB of Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM.

I started it in the morning (about 05:40) and went off to work. I came back in the evening with the task manager saying, that there was a 85% RAM usage.

In the users section of the task manager it says ~470Mb for my user.

I cannot for the life of me imagine that the system would take up 13GB

So: Is this normal and if so, why?

and if it is not normal, any idea what could cause it?

Greeting and thanks in advace

-Marius

So, I have exported the task managers tasks all into a csv file and added them up in excel. It's about 1/3rd of what the task manager is showing. Does it also show the reserved space as used up? (I'm only a windows user since this christmas)

What task manager shows on the RAM Graph: 7GB used

What task manager shows for my user: 1GB

What I calculated from the task manager export: 2.3 GB

Do you have Windows 7 or 8?

On Windows 8, Open the Task manager, and under the Processes tab, you will see a column called "Memory". It will show you how much each of your running programs are consuming.

On Windows 7, to to the Details tab on the Task Manager, and look at the memory column.

If you don't see it, right-click on the columns that you see, and select "Select Columns".

A small panel will show, and check the box: Memory (Private working set)

I am thinking that you wither have something that consume a lot of memory, or has a memory leak.

It's a mater of finding it, and uninstall that program.

What causes the memory issue is what I am trying to look into. Because I don't have the mentioned issue on any of my Windows 8.1 systems.

If you say it doesn't show anywhere in Task Manager, then it sounds like a driver that has a memory leak.

Do you have an Asus Mobo on any of your systems? I did some more research and as it turns out, it might be related to the AISuite.

I'm going to check this further once I get home.

I think it isn't the AISuite or anything related to it. I disabled them autostarting and restarted my pc. There is still more RAM shown as used up than there actually is used if you calculate it from the task manager export. I'm going to search further.

It could be a Windows bug. Yes.

The page just needs to be the size of your RAM. But for debugging, I would set it to let Windows manage it, restart, and see how it works out. If it works out, then shrink it to the size of your RAM if you need the space.

On all my Windows 8 systems, I have everything to default. I did not tweaks or system changes. Did not even disable a service.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the same issue, not to be bumping this thread... But where did you guys find the information about Windows 8.1 memory leak? Was there an article or something? If so can I get a link?

I got this message http://puu.sh/8zDl3/5313a2da27.png

Quite annoying I did say, having to restart only has been about 2 days since the last reboot.

I don't know where exactly I got the information. I read up a few other forums and websites.

Also: Just to update this thread, I'm still searching for what causes it. All I found out is that it ISN'T Rainmeter, XAMPP, AI Suite or Whatpulse

What I do also know is that the problem doesn't exist when in Safemode(with Network) when using Aurora 31.0a2 and Spotify

UPDATE:

I think it might actually be the Windows Explorer (at least partially) causing this. I started my computer in the morning as every day and just left it for a day with the Windows Explorer shut down but everything else running nominally. I got home in the evening and unlike the normal 60-80% RAM load I found it to only be 17-20%. It might be something closely tied in with explorer though.

If that is the case, it is probably due to an extension that a program installed into explorer.

For example, it could be a added right-click menu item. These things aren't registry items, they are loaded DLL's. So if it has a memory leak, explorer will show to have one, as it loads that "faulty" DLL.

It could also be a tool bar. Maybe some program installed a tool bar thinking you are on XP, explorer loads it, as it is instructed to, but fails to load and results in what you are happening, as it cant' display it due to the removal of ActiveX and IE from Explorer since Vista. I know I read on a forum, someone installed a CAD software and since explorer was keeping crashing when opening a folder. Removing the CAD software and it was solved.

So it is something to look into. I think CCleaner has a section that will show you for context menu loaded DLL's. Maybe try and disable those and restart and see if it helps.

Yes it has that section. I disabled all of the for now, see if the problem goes away. The only weird thing I found was, that there were 2xWinRAR and 2x WinRAR32 in there. I have WinRAR installet but..

I'll try it out in this config.

Letting you know if I find anything. Thanks for the great advice.
