I have an ASUS ROG Strix B550-E and I constantly have an external 14TB WD EasyStore USB HDD plugged in. My system waits for the drive to initialize before posting. Is there any way to let the system start up/load into Windows without waiting? Can the drive be initialized and recognized after Windows loads?

Basically no. It's waiting for spinup when the drive actually starts communicating so it can check whether it can boot from it or not.

You could try removing USB drives from the boot order to see if that helps.

I've seen similar to this... Are you sure it's not Windows wanting to check the USB disk? Because Windows IS stupid when it comes to USB HDDs and thinks they need to be 'checked'. It's easy to miss if you just wait for it to do its thing, and yes, it WILL take forever checking the disk. It does this BS every time my WD Passport is connected, but not my Seagate Backup Plus. Go figure.

The long wait time happens before I even see the boot logo, so Windows hasn't even started loading yet. Thanks for the suggestion though!

When you say boot logo, do you mean BIOS logo, board manufacturer logo, or Windows logo? Because mine does this when the Asus TUF logo is still on the screen and doesn't even display the Windows loading "wheel of dots".

I mean the first BIOS/Board logo that you get after the system posts. Where it gives you the option to press a button to enter BIOS. After this, the process is fairly quick so I don't think Windows is slowing it down.

If there are external drives connected, though, it could still be giving them the once over deciding whether they "smell right", which could cause a slight delay whether it decides to check them or not.

Could it be because I have write-caching enabled?
