AMD Opteron 33xx Server CPU undocumented compatability

bitta

I haven't seen it documented anywhere so I made an account to share my success.

The 970A AM3+ chipsets will accept the Opteron 3365 (AM3+ server cpu, 8 core 65 watt 2.3ghz)

The manufacturer sheet states the 32xx series is supported, but the support seems to also extend through the 33xx series

Why have I done this? I have a sub-par AM3+ mobo that will not work with a FX8350 (125w). The Opteron is an 8 core 65w alternative. I am hoping to save some power use (I am off-grid 100%).

I need as many threads as I can for the processes I run (full doge node, multiple rtl-sdr satelite decryption feeds, multiple vms). I do not need high freqs, just cores. It was a shot in the dark, but I had some old AM3+ bones lying around after my upgrade to ddr4  (I also run a 3700x system, a 5900hs laptop, and a 7700k based system)

TLDR:

970A chipsets undocumented support : AMD Opteron 3365 and likely any and all 33xx AM3+

If you need lots of threads, look on ebay for socket G34 motherboards

ex : dual socket g34 mobo for 45$ plus shipping ... add 2+ sticks of ram and a couple opteron 6100 cpus and maybe some heatsinks https://www.ebay.com/itm/332127958156

or auction now $100 for mobo + 2 x 16 core cpus : https://www.ebay.com/itm/115426102894

You're wasting electricity with those cpus and socket am3/am3+

Can you tell me what the exact power use of the system you suggested? I'm not very keen on running 2 cpus

I used what I have lying around, my power budget (battery bank) was built around a much hungrier set of systems. Like I said, the FX8350 was using 2x the power. I am saving power from a 'relative' perspective.

Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of eficient boards but this was a matter of what was availble.

I've just researched this suggested setup and it seems to use quite a bit more power than I can budget. Likely 300 watts in cpu power alone
