Help with upgrading memory

Go to solution Solved by mr fobs,

The performance difference you would get from 3200 to 3600 isn't worth that price difference. My recommendation would be go for the 4x8Gb set up and play around with maybe OC them.

Hey,

I'll make this short, I need to double my ram from 16gb to 32gb for work, but I'm undecided which ram to buy. I currently have this kit 16gb 3200mhz cl16 from g.skill and can get the same kit (which would result in 4x8gb 32gb 3200mhz cl16) for 90€. I'm also tempted to get a brand new kit of 32gb 3600mhz cl16 (this one) which comes in 2x16gb sticks. It costs 250€ but it's supposedly b-die and has better timings and frequency.

Also, if you have any suggestions for the same type of memory, but with better value, suggestions are welcome.

Is it worth buying new ram right now? I'm probably not going to switch to Ryzen 6000 but will instead upgrade my 3700x to a 5900x in a few months (that's why I want better memory), so I most likely won't migrate to a DDR5 platform anytime soon. I mainly use the machine for work (devops and dabbing my feet in machine learning) and gaming (1440p).

All the feedback is appreciated!

This question comes down to if you want the high frequency and timings. I would personally not buy any lower than 3600Mhz for a 5gh gen Ryzen which I find to be the sweet spot if I did build a new system. Nevertheless, as you are only upgrading the ram (and the CPU in the future) my recommendation is to buy one more kit of the one you already have. The higher frequency and lower timing is not enough to outweight the price difference.

But if you have the money no one will stop you.

I would like to add, you can not get RGB Ram and save a heck ton of money and get 3600 CL 16 Ram for around the same price as 3200 CL16 RGB Ram.

Can you link any? Preferably an EU site. I've been searching and they're not that much cheaper.

Oh maybe not in the EU then.. On the US NewEgg site 3600MHz CL 16 is $138 vs $170.

I agree with spannvis, if you have the money to, do it, but if money is tight, the performance difference won't be worth the extra cost.

Yeah, I ordered an extra pair of my old ram. Actually played around with OCing and got it to 3600mhz no problem, with solid timings. So it's a win win i guess 😄
