Did Windows lock my drive?

91Sputnik

I recently got rid of a laptop that had a WD blue NVME SSD in it after taking the drive out. I never formatted the drive as I was going to use it in a new laptop. It has Windows 11 on it. I installed the drive in the new laptop and Windows does not detect it. It shows up in the bios though. I tried booting to a Windows 11 flash drive and using diskpart and it did not see the drive. Any ideas?

Try with a live Linux distro or Gparted. I've often had similar issues with windows before. I think it's some sort of safeguard to prevent people from taking a drive from one PC and putting it in another. But you should be able to format it using Gparted at the very least, I believe. If even that doesn't work... It would mean the drive was somehow locked to that hardware, which I doubt is the case

Have you tried removing's all drives except for this one and seeing if it can boot into the windows install on it? I have had windows act up previously when a drive had/has a windows install on it, I ended up removing all other drives, logging into the windows install on the drive that was acting up, removing anything unnecessary and shrinking the windows partition to be as small as possible then I made a new partition on the drive with the remaining space.

Once I did that the drive was able to show up in my other windows install in disk manager and I could format it but I think I ended up reformatting it again using Linux since it still had windows recovery crap on it.

What laptop is it? Could be that if the BIOS is set to operate the drives in RAID mode drivers are needed to access them.

It's an Asus ZenBook flip Q58EH. I just went and bought a brand new drive and it's doing the same thing. It sees it in the bios but Windows installer can't find it.

So see in the BIOS what options there could be for storage / drive modes.
