My PC suddenly became sluggish while I was using it. Prior to this event I was using Adobe Photoshop and had Chrome open playing a YouTube video on the background then out of nowhere the audio stopped and the video image froze. At first I thought my internet died out and the video was simply trying to buffer but when I clicked on Chrome to try and refresh the site the application was so sluggish that when I tried replaying the video it acted like a PowerPoint presentation.

I then turned my attention to Adobe Photoshop to see if there were issues there too but I found out that Alt Tabbing between apps were also sluggish.

I also had HWMonitor open the entire time so I opened it to see if it was overheating but the readout froze and the last thermal reading was at its normal range prior to the slow down issue.

I then proceeded to reboot my PC, this seemed to have resolved the issue. However, during the entire issue the Photoshop file I was working on got corrupted. Event Manager couldn't clue me in on the cause of the issue either.

I've also been told that this issue happened before back around January when my father used my PC. He was simply browsing social media when the same slow down occured and was resolved when he rebooted the system.

I would like to know what could've been the cause of this issue and if there are any ways I could prevent it in the future.

Here are my specs

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2x8gb 3200mhz

Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 LED Turbo White

GPU: Colorful iGame RTX 3060ti Ultra

Motherboard: ASUS B550-A Strix

Storage: Samsung 870 QVO 1tb (OS)

              : Seagate Barracuda 2tb

so.. first the dumb stuff:

- is the pc slowing down, or is something using up resources? (different thing, same outcome.)

- have you gone over the cables to make sure nothing came loose? perhaps a loose cable is causing errors or instability.

- is event log noting anything interesting? (cpu power state warnings, driver warnings/errors, software crashes, ..)

- It was running completely fine for about 3 hours then it suddenly started freezing up until the only thing that's responsive was the cursor. Only thing I had running before the issue occurred were Photoshop, Chrome, and HWMonitor.

- I've double checked the cables and looked at the inside of my case to see if anything was dislodged but all seemed physically fine.

- Only Critical Event was the log about the unexpected shut down when I rebooted the system.

look at task manager, what are the symptoms when it stalls out. is the cpu pinned? is it idle? is ram pinned? is the hard drive pinned? is the clock still moving?

Well, I can't say what the symptoms are now because after the reboot everything is working fine. Temps shown on HWMonitor are normal and Task Manager's reporting no strange behaviour. I would like to mention that this issue has only occured twice in the 8 months since I've built my PC. But I'm hoping for a preventive measure for this in the future.

What about any warnings? They can also sometimes provide info.
