I have an intel core i5 4590 with 4 cores and 4 threads on my computer. It is obviously very old, and basically obsolete for new games. However, this CPU completely spikes while playing ANY game out there. It jumps to 100% usage on games like Minecraft and Borderlands 2, which are not only light games to run, but they are also games that came before the CPU. The temperatures are fine, and I make sure to have no background tasks running. I even ran Malwarebytes, which came back negative. It has come to a point where my GTX 970, which is already very old only runs at 70-80% in some games

For those saying that it is because it is simply a bad CPU, here is a video of someone using the same processor with an even worse GPU than mine, while getting better averages and no stutters:

So is there a question? I see youtube people playing with old stuff and getting better frames than me. Doesn't change the fact my hardware is crap and runs like it. A worse card would be more ideal.

Yeah it was a poorly worded post on my part. I pretty much was curious as to why so many people with the same CPU as I have weren't experiencing awful stutters, especially considering my CPU didn't use to do this

minecraft is cpu intensive so it will work your cpu to crap

  • 4 weeks later...

I have the same issue, 8600k running at 4.9ghz. Most games would ramp up the cpu usage to 100%. Minecraft, AC Odyssey, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 etc.

I began noticing when I came back from holiday and my cpu temps were sky-high. I'm talking like 80 degrees celcius. My BeQuiet 240 AIO was running like a dream for the last 3 years and i'd never thought to open it and clean it until then.

Cleaning it out certainly dropped the temps but the usage is still high. I dont have a direct solution to your problem but maybe check your cooling solution/remount it.

My temps definitely dropped back to normal figures but i'm still seeing high cpu usage when overclocked.

When I'm running stock speeds, I don't think they're quite as high but it makes my games feel slugish.

You'd think an 8600k at 4.9ghz would be able to run minecraft without much issue.

Quick note: under normal usage, Desktop Windows Manager might use up to 30% of my CPU in task manager and that's what's bothering me most

Something is terribly wrong if that is happening.

When using the Task Manger, do not use the first two tabs. The information in those two tabs is CPU Utilization which is not the same as CPU Usage on Intel CPUs. The nice graphs are also CPU Utilization, not CPU usage. Only look at the Details tab to see what your CPU usage is.

dwm.exe is not using any significant percentage of my CPU when my computer is idle. If you want smooth game play, work on getting System idle Process to 99%. Too many people with problems have installed programs on to their computer that suck up way too much of the CPU. Many of these apps do not need to be running at all.
