What CPU are you running? Most of the time the super fast spec'd kits are impossible to run on everything but a couple CPUs by just enabling XMP. Plus DDR4 and DDR5 make a difference.

Also the super fast kits are more for RAM overclockers than they are for "enable XMP and go" type systems.

im looking for high capacity, high speed, and low cas latency ram.

You can only really have one of those. High capacity hinders the memory speed and latency, higher speed means the CL timing will be looser (though usually still faster overall), and really tight CL means that the frequency will be pretty limited.

  1. im currently own a 12900k intel cpu however i havent fully built the computer yet. also, should i get high capacity ram, higher speed ram, or lower cl ram? which is best?

Best memory performance is a non-trivial topic. Without knowing anything about system usage, it's not really possible to suggest an amount of memory. Without knowing the amount of memory and motherboard, it's not really possible to suggest an optimal memory configuration.

AT least tell us:

  1. Motherboard
  2. Usage, i.e. applications/games
  3. If you plan to overclock
  4. If appearances are important

If this is a new high-end system get a 2x16gb (23gb total) kit from a known brand like crucial, corsair, or g. skill.  4800MHz for DDR5, 3200MHz for DDR4 (3600MHz seems to be a problem farm on some boards).

There isn't best RAM for gaming, really.  Meme-ram is for machine learning.  Reliable RAM that goes fast enough for your CPU is gonna game exactly the same as meme-RAM.  Save your money for a better monitor or high end peripherals or a good supportive chair.  Those things will effect your gaming experience in a real way.

What do you need 64GB for?  Most people with 16GB systems still aren't running into any walls with gaming, and 32 is the go-to simply because 20GB kits don't exist.  64GB is just gonna be wasting money on RAM your system will never use.  Unused RAM does absolutely nothing.

is 64 gigs nessecary if im going to be doing video editing, programming, twitch, and youtube on the side?

No.  A lot of programs for editing used to cap out at 16 anyway, they can probably use more now but toy limited effect unless you're doing some pretty intense stuff.  With a full game load not while streaming I usually cap out at 13.5 gb utilized even with windows and browsers doing shit.  Higher end games and a stream might get you up to like 20, but that's still with windows 11 doing everything it can to make use of extra ram.  32 would never be an inhibitor.  Computer engineering students when I was in school from 2014-2017 still had 8gb on their laptops and got their work done, so 32gb will be more than enough for anything you'll be doing.

I’d say it’s excessive but it’ll get the job done that’s for sure.

check the max on your motherboard, might be 128g. If that’s the case, might as well go all-out and get 4x 32g sticks. Won’t have to upgrade later…?  I’d go that route

simply Bc, if u decide on 32/64 now, across 4 DIMMs, you’ll need to replace all of them should you go 128g in the future (unless u get 2x32). Either way, the weakest link in the chain will b the speed the ram runs at, hence its best to get all of them same brand/model

im planning on getting a z690 maximus motherboard. i will be using the pc for primarily for gaming, however i’d occasionally be doing some twitch, youtube, programming, and video editing on the side. and yes, i will be overclocking.

If you want 64GB of memory the Hero and Extreme have three kits on the memory QVL CMT64GX5M2X5200C38(Ver 3.43.01), CMK64GX5M4A4400C36(ver 3.43.01), and CMK64GX5M2A4400C36(Ver 3.43.01). All Corsair kits. All Micron chips. The first is DDR5-5200, the other two are DDR5-4400. If my memory of various DDR5 memory scaling articles is accurate, very little difference between these speeds given the timings.

G.Skill does not list any compatible 64GB kits, just 2x16GB.

I'd message the guy who made that video and ask how much ram he needed.  what I meant was like, if this is a project 8 years in the making idk how much ram he had when he started it, but 32 would probably be more than enough.

That's for laptops (SO-DIMM), the 5600MHz kit is the one for desktops.

I mean u gotta keep in mind DDR5 is still in its infancy. That being said, improvements will b made in the future. Faster, larger capacity and so on. Of course the usual, working out the bugs and such.  Your call

personally id just rock ddr4 for the next 3-4 years (longer maybe?) then go all out on a DDR5 system - then keep the ddr4

as a backup or server.

heck, use it as a rendering “cloud”, double your horsepower?  Why not!  (Autocad and many other enterprise apps support it)
