SSD's stopped working after installing power supply

Hidden Angel

Hey there, I'm not even sure if this is the correct forum but here is my problem

My power supply started making heavily sound so I decided to change it, I found an old power supply in my basement and installed it, booted up everything looks fine... Except my storage devices, I have 2 ssd they are not recognized in bios, changed SATA cables, still nothing, so I thought it the motherboard or something, so I installed the ssd's on a different computer still nothing, changed back my power supply same thing, so i literally spent the last few dollars in my pocket to buy new one cuz I have exams and other things, so I installed the new ssd in other computer and it works fine, then I installed it on my computer with the old power supply and literally it's not recognized anymore, I really don't care about the ssd's or anything, I just want a few files including my seminar project and I really don't have a back up, it's too late to start over the project.

So my question is there any way to make the ssd's work again or get the files? I'm so hopeless right now

You could try messing around with the boot settings within your bios to see how your ssd(s) are interpreted by your motherboard

From that sounds like that power supply could have damaged those drives. In your BIOS do you get voltage read outs, can you see if the 12v is actually 12v or close and the same with the 5v and 3.3v

If your power supply has a molex the best course would be to use a multimeter (carefully) to check the 12v and 5v

You may have to go the data recovery route if you have anyone local or close that can perform data recovery services on an SSD. If i was in your situation i would actually try a SATA to USB adapter dock to make sure the SSD are in fact dead. Use another system that can boot into windows to check the drives via the adapter. And dont use that PSU again until you or someone else can verify the PSU is ok and is giving the correct voltage. The mainboard may be able to handle slightly higher voltage on those rails but i doubt an SSD has much tolerance. If the PSU's voltage rails are off you may not even need a data recovery service if you can have an electronics technician look at the SSD's circuit board as it may have just damaged some component(s)

The real question is did you use the power cabbles that com with the PSU. Lots of people fry their HDD/SSD by just swapping the PSU, and connecting the old PSU power cables, from different PSU.

At first you did not replace the SATA cables? In that case you probably short your storage divices.
