Virtualize my PC?

EsiMiDobar

Hi All,

I have been thinking lately about having NAS/IoT server available but when I think about it I already have my PC almost always ON - It can stay turned on for 24/7 then.

But - I'm using PC for games and work as Dual boot of Windows 10 and Ubuntu.

As I'm running AMD 1600AF and definitely not using over 50% of it for games or work I could maybe split it up?

Is it possible run Linux as base OS and than virtualize multiple VPS on top of it?

For example this structure:

  1. Base OS - 1c/2t - Always ON
  2. NAS  IoT - 1c/2t - Always ON
  3. Windows/Ubuntu - 4c/8t - Starting different OS when I need it.

As my "new" GPU died I'm currently using some old dusty GPUs (AMD R7 250 + Nvidia GeForce 210) to run 3 monitor setup.

btw - "Currently" is for last 2 years, and if this s##t with prices continues it will be until I swap 1600AF for some 5700G.

Why do you need to virtualize anything when all you do is run a file server? If you want to test anything, just launch virtualbox.

Well, I don't want to have just file server. I also want to have safe space for both systems.

So I would like to separate space where I thinker (NAS/IoT server) and have  Windows/Work VPS always stable.

I personally woulnt but if you still want to, you can install proxmox on your bare metal, allocate the amount of hardware you want to a VM and passthough your graphics cards and peripherals so that you can use it. Proxmox requires you to have a device of sorts thats is connected to the same network as your way of controlling your hypervisor.

FYI, this comes with a performance overhead (it can be minimal depending on what you plan on doing).

Thanks, I will check out proxmox.

I tried it before on old netbooks but it had too many issues.

Also one of reasons I want to use PC as NAS - It has 1Gbps LAN so I can utilize 1Gbps fiber connection.
