Which version of Windows are you specifically referring to? Windows 10? I believe you can use a local account, but I am hearing that with Windows 11 Home, you cannot use a local account anymore.

I see. I believe in order to purchase a key from the MS Store, you will need an account with MS, sort of like Steam.

Although, any particular reason for buying through the MS Store? There are plenty of places where you can get a Windows 10 pro activation key, so you are better off buying a key, and just downloading the ISO, and doing an install.

the windows store is the only place to get a retail licence and i heard that if you buy an oem licence you can't transfer it so if i ever want to swap motherboard i would have to buy a new key not entirely sure about that though

I am 99% certain that the OEM license will not let you install if you swap out the motherboard. But if with a GPU or a SSD, you should be fine.

However, generally speaking, the OEM licenses are so cheap (depending on where you buy it), that if you have to buy it a second time, you will still only pay a fraction of what you would pay for a full retail license.

Its definitely something for you to consider.
