Hi All,

I have been attempting to plan my server build for a few weeks, I know what I want it to do, but I don't know what components to use.  My real problems finding the CPU/MOBO, but if you see any other glaring problems I would appreciate your input.  I have a budget of around £1500-£2000. I am in the UK.  I live in a rented apartment, so I am going the DIY approach for ease of transport, Less Noise etc.  I do care about the power consumption, but its not a show stopper for me, as long as the idle power draw isn't absurd.

Main Use:

  • Proxmox as HV
  • TrueNAS VM/Container - ZFS 3x HDD RAIDZ1 w/ SSD cache.
  • Nextcloud
  • Bitwarden
  • Sonarr/Radarr
  • Self-hosting
  • 1x Windows Server VM - Tinkering
  • 1x Linux VM

Current Build Plan:

  • Case : Fractal Design Define R5
  • CPU: ?
  • RAM: DDR4 32GB ECC (16GB for NAS/ZFS and 16GB for everything else)
  • MOBO: ?
  • Storage: 3x Seagate Ironwolf 8TB & 1x 1TB M.2 NVMe (Boot) & 1x 250GB SSD
  • PSU: Corsair RM550x

What I need from CPU/MOBO:

  • IPMI
  • 8-10 SATA ports (Future expansion of NAS)
  • 1-2x M.2 connections
  • DDR4 RAM
  • Xeon Processor - <95 TDP

I appreciate any help you can give.

Cheers

Why put an SSD cache in ZFS? I wouldn’t waste the money or time doing that, it SSD cache in ZFS doesn’t really do what most people think they do; they don’t really speed anything up. You could use a SSD for SLOG or ZIL, but I mostly guarantee you don’t need that and it wouldn’t help anything. SSD’s in ZFS just make things more complicated unless you know you need it.

I would look at more drives as well, you can eat up a few TB very quickly, and adding more space down the line is expensive since you would need to build a new vdev with its own redundancy.

For mobo and CPU, I just picked up used e5 2660v4’s for myself and a buddy. 64 GB of ECC 2133 DDR4, and Supermicro X10SRi-f’s for about 650 bucks total, with a 500gb nvme, the PCIe riser needed for them to actually work on that mobo, and a noctua heatsink.
