Increasing RTX 3080 availability

irishbeast

Things are definitely getting better in the UK as I can pick up 3080s relatively easy now, albeit at inflated prices.

Can get second hand basic 10gb for about £900 and 12gig TI's for about £1300-1400. Still above MSRP and the cheaper ones are all sold out but promising nonetheless.

I have a 3070 and am really tempted to go for a 3080 either 10gb or 12gb ti. The performance increase would appear to be quite significant from youtube benchmark videos I have watched but wonder if anyone has recently upgraded from 3070 to 3080 ti or regular.

The 3070 handles everything well but chokes a little bit on Far Cry at ultra res and refresh (45-50FPS) so run at 1080 or 1440p, thats the game I play the most at the moment. Fifa and Forza 5 are fine at 4k although I don't have a high refresh 4k screen.

Gonna try and flog my 3070 for about £550-600 and add a few hundred to buy a 3080. Seems a bit of a no brainer. Altghough it is a bit crazy "addingh a few hundred pounds" on top of a good GPU to buy another one. Should be able to buy something decent for a few hundred but we all know thats not been the case for ages , and won't be any time soon. I think mining becoming a bit crap has a lot of people selling. The £900 cards I mentioned are second hand but would prefer to pay the bit extra for a new one I think.

Anyone upgraded recently? Have a Ryzen 5900X so CPU is not gonna bottleneck. All SSD drives, nothing out of the ordinary. 16 Gb ram (Soon to be 32 gig, just need to install modules). So a decent unit

One potential issue is my PSU which is a 750W bronze Corsair. On paper it should be enough but again I was hoping for some real life experiences as I have recently recased my machine and swapping PSU would be a pain I don't need. A simple gpu swap would be nice and simple. Deliberately have next to nothing in terms of RGB as it doens't do it for me and just seems a bit of a waste of power, although probably not much. Just a personal preference.

I only play a 1440p mainly on my gaming monitor so am assuming that with no exception (unless CP2077) that every game would run at ultra and with high FPS on a 3080? I've spent a fair bit of cash lately on tech so this will be my last upgrade to the main unit for at least 18 month (famous last words!). I've heard mixed opinion on whether the TI is worth the extra money over the standard 3080? OPinions on this welcome

Thanks in advance

I would suggest to go for a 3080 and save a little money. You can get close to 3080 Ti performance from a 3080 just by overclocking it. Here's a good video comparing them.

About the PSU, I recently switched mine out because of a broken fan and I hate replacing all the cables too. I just ordered the exact same brand and model but added a 100 watts and left the cables in place (went from be quiet straight power 11 650w to 750w). Easy swap. That only works of course if your PSU is modular.

Thanks for reply @Frenky

Its semi modular, just to be awkward!

I think that might have been one of the videos I watched that suggested the difference between regular and TI is not that great for the 3080. Different to the 3060 vs 3060Ti were the latter performs quite a bit better. Lack of consistency definitely. Or maybe nvidia think they can justify squeezing a bit more money by puttin Ti after the GPU model!

Suprising that the 3090 performance is pretty the same as the 3080Ti. Its not even an option on my budget really. Absolutely no way I could jusify that for gaming.

Wonder how many 3090 owners we have on here? Obviously I would love one but its just pointless for my needs

Here is the difference between a high end 3080, low end 3080 ti and high end 3080 ti at 1440p.

This is with an i9 9900k.

The cards are:

ROG Strix White OC:  370 watt stock power limit

EVGA XC3 Ultra:         350 watt stock power limit

EVGA FTW3 Ultra:      400 watt stock power limit

These are older games because I use the benchmarks to see what I get from upgrades.

A high end 3080 like the ROG Strix is very close to a low end 3080 ti but can be owned by a high end 3080 ti. I prefer the XC3 Ultra 3080 ti over the Strix because of the vram.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider         1440p

i9 9900k

ROG Strix 3080                           144fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti                         143fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti                      154fps

Horizon Zero Dawn                    1440p

i9 9900k

ROG Strix 3080                          118fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti                        128fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti                     155fps

Assassins Creed Odyssey        1440p

i9 9900k

ROG Strix 3080                          82fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti                        90fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti                     89fps

The high end 3080 ti can pull away by about 20 frames from the 3080 in some games at 1440p so I think it is worth getting.

The FTW3 Ultra is in a my 5900x rig now and it can do over 50 frames more at 1440p in some games than the i9 9900k but I have never put the 3080 in it.

The reason is the vram. My modded games use less than 12 but more than 10 and I can feel it with the 3080. If it was a 12gb version it would not be an issue.

I have a MSI Gaming X Trio 3090 and it performs about the same as a FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti. It is in a video editing rig since that uses the vram. I am planning to get another as a spare so I will stick it in a gaming rig just for fun.

Thanks @jones177

Just saw this which is a local second hand shop but offers 2 year warranty on everything

https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=SGRAMSI308010G02&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3-yQBhD3ARIsAHuHT679btKiND9lzrMdoq344kvXxITpcmjdR6SuSCQeQgiBLLcg-88AEgMaAu2ZEALw_wcB

Below is brand new but from a lesser known brand

https://www.awd-it.co.uk/components/graphics-cards/nvidia/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080/kfa2-geforce-rtx-3080-sg-1-click-oc-lhr-10gb-gddr6-graphics-card.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA3-yQBhD3ARIsAHuHT65giOb9dUdwmcjF5q3bOuU3qWuEJpPo36a1WkTidULk0k6lK25GGf4aArgBEALw_wcB

I think the first is a better option as price difference is peanuts. Yes its second hand but the 2 year warranty renders that a non issue. Think I am about to cash in my bitcoin and but the first! The 3080ti I can get seem to be about £1300. It is tempting I won't lie but given that the  cards hold their value so well I could always upgrade but I douba a 3080 will be a problem any time soon!

Thanks for posting the info above. The Ti defintely does pack more of a punch but is it worth an extra £300 (400USD) I don't know.

Is there any way of knowing if the first link is LHR? It would be mainly used for gaming but I also leave Nicehash running when not gaming so a decent hash return would help. Mining is generally a bit naff now but if it could make even a little bit of profit every week then it would make it more appealling certainly. With it being used there is more chance of it being non LHR I believe but theres no way of knowing from the advert I dont think. Please correct me if I am wrong!

Curveball thrown! £1299 for a 3080Ti

https://www.awd-it.co.uk/components/graphics-cards/nvidia/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti/palit-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-gamerock-12gb-gddr6x-pci-express-graphics-card.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA3-yQBhD3ARIsAHuHT646CAQDWdpcA0vJmIpwxcq6hQRDbUuQzh937Yoz7CAK3b_Rap4aRTkaAlhKEALw_wcB

Are Palit decent brand? I could get a gigabyte one for £100 more but its basically the same surely. The palit one is ugly as hell so maybe I should spent the extra £100.

Really don't know what to do as I want to buy before they are out of stock at this price. Seems to be feast or famine at the moment

By the end of the week I coudl have a 5900X, 32 gigs of ram and a 3080ti GPU. Might actually stop spending money then for a while! Annoyingly I cannot order from the 2nd hand shop as I need it to come to a diffferent delivery address and there will be nobody here. Very irritiating as I don't want it being kicked around the sorting office as they very often are

That is a good one. I didn't know if my 3080 is LHR or not before reading your post.

The only way to know for sure is the device ID that is displayed with GPUZ. Mine is 2206 so non LHR. If it was 2216 then it would be LHR.

It should say on the box as well.

There is a big difference between 3080 tis.

The Palit Gamerock is a middle of the road card the has 3 8 pin power connectors but a low boost clock of 1665mhz. It uses 350 watts stock and 400 watts overclocked.

By contrast my FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti has a boost clock of 1800mhz and uses 400 watts stock and 45 watts overclocked.

Use this video to compare cards.
