Hi Guys,

I'm having an issue running 'This is the police 2' on my laptop. This is not a graphically intensive game, I only have Intel 4600HD so it could be as simple as my on board graphics just can't run it, but according to 'can i run it' it should be able to cope.

The crash is happening during the intro at completely different points, anywhere between about 10-60 seconds into the game. The game just freezes and that's it (no black screen or anything). Hitting windows key returns to normal PC function with no problems.

Here's what I've done so far:

- changed game settings to 'safe video mode' (presumably just lowers the settings?)

- ruled out my graphics not running any games (recently played 'this is the police 1' and 'this war is mine' without any problems

- re-downloaded and reinstalled the game, same issue happening

- checked drivers are up to date (according to windows they are the latest version)

- checked I have the latest version of DirectX (12)

- disabled anti virus and ran, same problem happening

- checked that overheating isn't the problem (temps at time of crash = high 60's low 70's)

I would imagine reinstalling drivers would be the usual port of call but I'm not sure how this would work with on board graphics (presumably you'd need some running!).

My spec:

-Intel i7-4702MQ

- HD4600 on board graphics

- 8GB RAM

- SSD

- Windows 10

- Playing via Steam

Any suggestions would be welcome. I've read several guides on the net but they all suggest downloading multiple software and just reeks of going down a rabbit hole that won't yield any results (we've all been there before!). I'm hoping it might just be something simple that you guys may point out.

Thanks in advance.

Are you running any sort of overclocks on your laptop?
Would clear CMOS to rule that out if able.

As far as the game goes, does any other game crash that is somewhat intensive?

Kinda sounds like a poorly coded game so far (don't know of the game, it's just the only one you say crashes)

Does event viewer-> windows logs-> system show any critical or error level logs? Looks for times near the crash

As far as a graphics driver goes, yeah uninstall via device manager and make sure to click "delete driver software"

You would still get an image as there is a basic windows VGA graphics driver that you can't remove for obvious reasons. Your picture might look like junk but it will work just fine

Thanks for the reply. I've never done any OC. This laptop is primarily used for work and hardly any games.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the graphics drivers. Same problem unfortunately.

This log from event viewer may suggest the problem? Not sure what to do with that from here?!

Update. Did a bit of googling based on @Frizz's helpful advice on locating the driver problem (4101 error) and found a guy with the exact same problem with the same on board graphics. I followed his guide here:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/igfx-stopped-responding-and-has-successfully/760a1c9f-0491-4d21-bac3-c7daf9e70790

By god it seemed to work! I got through the intro of the game (which was hideously long). I thought I was on to a winner.

......and then - the problem reoccurred. It's definitely hit another block on a different part of the game because it happens within 5-10 seconds of this particular screen.

It's 100% a display problem as the sound (and game) is still running and sound effects when I click on certain things - although the screen has frozen i can tell things should make certain sounds in the right places when clicked and they do. So the game is definitely still running it's just the display that crashes.

Not sure where I can go from here? The older driver I installed definitely improved things but now get stuck on a different part.

My next suggestion but it is a stretch is use DDU.

That wipes out all leftover driver data.
Because that error deals with a faulty driver, overheating or a failing GPU. And you already verified it is not overheating.

I would also make sure your drive and OS is healthy too. In cmd: chkdsk /f /r (it will need rebooted)

Then in elevated power shell: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Thanks for that, I'll look into following these steps. Worryingly for me there's lots of stories online about error 4101 being a known and fairly wide reaching problem but nobody caring enough about it to solve it. The most common theory seems to be a problem with windows 10 and the driver.

It's definitely not temps - the problems happens straight away from start. Verified with HW monitor there's no issues there.

Edit: just had the error kick in within about 7 seconds with CPU at c. 63c and GPU c. 60c. Game definitely still continuing but game screen frozen.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's always annoying when people never finish off their threads so.....

A few days after reinstalling an older graphics driver, despite it no initially solving the problem I gave it another go and......it worked! Problem fixed. Why it didn't work straight away I don't know. Maybe the gremlins in my laptop just had to reset themselves, who knows.

I don't know for a fact that reinstalling the driver solved the problem but it seems highly likely. So if anyone is reading this with the same problem, follow the link I proved a few posts above this.

Thanks for the help provided.
