this is my 1st build so other than the youtube info cram for the past several days, i don't have any experience. what im looking to do is just start out with something decently strong. my budget is also a bit flexible, but obviously the more i can save the better. if what i have selected can be improved, (which it probably can) im open to all the help i can get. thanks

A MUCH MUCH Better build, I will send another one with a better GPU for better gaming performance.  If you are looking into streaming or video recording, Use this build, it has a CPU that is more than DOUBLE the multithreaded performance(12 core 8-p 4-e) and 20-25% better single core.  Along with a better GPU (scalper markup included) And you are jumping onto a BRAND NEW platform on intel z690 which has guaranteed support for at least another 1-2 generations.  Where as AM4 is on its last generation of support.  Combine that with a much faster SSD better PSU and its a way better experience all around

Arguable, the 980 is about the same speed as 970 evo, but without the dram cache. I think you might be thinking of the 980 pro. Thanks samsung for that new confusing naming convention

Yeah lol I just realized that, I usually grab the cheapest SSD at a given storage and price, I don't really care about a DRAM cache and my PC is fast enough for me (still on PCI-E gen3 with the 10900k)

Oh right, I didn't make any recommendations. Stick with gen 3 to save money; gen 4 if you want the best. There is no real world difference between the two yet.

Good gen 3 drives:

I have personal experience with all the companies above besides Sabrent.  I have never had an ADATA drive die/slow down on me for the last 9-10 YEARS that I have been using their drives, fast as a bullet even their lowerend drives, can't speak for the XPG series though.

Crucial: Great all around, fast for the price and the customer support and warranty are unparalleled (I had 1 drive DOA and they 1 day shipped me a new one the next day)

Silicon power:cheap good.

A 5600X would result in much better performance, and went with a good air cpu cooler (you don't need a liquid cpu cooler tbh, especially not for a Ryzen 5 cpu). Also went with a 2TB NVME SSD, and a better case & case fan configuration. The Commander Core XT will power all of the fans in the build, and help control the RGB much better too.

awesome, so this is cheaper and will perform better than the previously suggested setup? @GeorgeMKane

It for sure will. Cheaper, even though I was able to get more storage too. Air CPU cooler's are more than enough for Ryzen 5 (That one's been reviewed by J2C very well too).

The Commander Core XT will make setting up and connecting the RGB case fans much easier too.

what would you say about the drives they suggested? because the adata and silicon 3rd gens i can get 2 tb for about $10 less than the drive you had @GeorgeMKane. are there performance differences i'm assuming

Intel 660p would be a solid choice. $10 cheaper too. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7MQG3C/intel-660p-series-2tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-ssdpeknw020t8x1

A 1TB M.2 NVME SSD + a 1TB 2.5" SSD combo is usually a little cheaper too. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bspNGL

i think i just have one more question. the setup is flagging something as incompatible. when i look at what it is, it says that the bios might need to be updated. will that be a problem or should everything be fine? @GeorgeMKane

The motherboard is made for 3rd gen Ryzen, but 5th gen Ryzen released with basically no new motherboards (except higher priced updated ones). You should be fine, as long as the box says "Ryzen 5000 Series Ready" when you receive it (most motherboards ship with a new BIOS installed already anyways, so you may not need to worry about that at all).

If the box doesn't say that anywhere, then you'll most likely just have to update the BIOS. That'll require another computer and a decent 8gb usb flash drive. The motherboard manufacturer's website has step by step instructions on how to do that, as well as videos on youtube regarding the subject. It's pretty easy to update the BIOS.

ok awesome. also I actually really wanted to stick with my original case (Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case) and that already comes with 3 fans (The CORSAIR iCUE SP120 RGB PRO Performance Fan) I checked the specs and it seems to just have slightly less performance. would these be fine to use or do you think I should just stick with the fans you suggested? @GeorgeMKane

you can stick with the case that you originally had.  Also I would still REALLY recommend my previous configs among other things these are the immediate  problems that I see with this build.

Overpriced motherboard for ryzen 5 CPU.  You should be looking in the $100-130 Range for a ryzen 5 build

Overpriced Trident RGB Ram.  You can get a kit at the same speed with basically the same dies for $110

Overpriced PSU (Yes I know you shoudn't cheap out but $100 for a 650 watt is horrible especially since you HAVE to go through corsair RMA if you want to return it)

Finally $100 ON FANS! Spend $50 AT MOST for some noctua p12 redux fans.  I guarantee they will perform better and be quieter than the RGB ones.

These Changes could save you a lot of money OR get you a better GPU

If your set on the Ryzen 5(I would recommend a 12600k for the new platform and pci-e gen 5) here is an edited config

This build has a better upgrade path and costs $200 less  Which if you put into a better GPU you can get WAY better gaming performance

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XLJGXy

(Replace with 6600xt for the $200 $1680 price tag)

No it would not.  The 5600x is worlds slower than both the 5700g and the 12700k I specked. Stop spreading misinformation

I was talking about it being better than the 3600. Don't get an attitude with people just trying to help others. Also, the 5700G isn't better, but the 12700K is. I don't care what you recommended. I wasn't going by that.

as of right now I am bit confused. i liked @GeorgeMKane setup because it was a bit cheaper and had the rgb. @xXGaming123 setup is supposed to perform better, but it costs more. (you said it was cheaper, but the it says otherwise). the gpu in @xXGaming123 original setup isnt available. if theres something i'm not understanding i'm sorry. again i am very new to this
