Specs: 3060ti

i7 8700k oc to 4.7

16gb DDR4 ram

so ive recently been playing red dead redemption two and my usages seem to be fluctuating a lot. The video where I’m getting 100fps and the usage goes into the 80s is 1440p and the other video that’s 90fps average with a more stable gpu usage is 1660p (ALL HUB SETTINGS) I don’t understand why the usages a different when this is such a demanding game anyway on 1080p. When I run 1080p HUB and I’m in a town (valentine) my usage goes into the 60s and I’m getting like 70fps but when I up the resolution I get more or the same fps and my usage is in the 90s. Is this literally just my Cpu holding me back at certain points and I’m just thinking too into it or does there seem to be a problem? I also get little stutters now and again which can be annoying but idk if that’s just the engine. I also don’t know if there’s a NVIDIA control panel setting I have changed or a setting within windows that I should have on or off. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Nothing those videos show is abnormal. Those are not fluctuations in usage that you need to be worried about. Your framerate is consistent. The footage looks reasonably smooth. There might be a slight CPU bottleneck for the second one, but it's hardly a bad one.

When you drop the resolution, and your GPU usage goes down into the 60s, it's due to a CPU bottleneck. The CPU has to work harder to push more frames, but it can't keep up with the GPU. Also, Amphere's architecture doesn't scale as well at lower resolutions, so it's harder to get full utilization at 1080p.

4.7ghz isn't really an overclock.

That chip is capable of 5ghz around 1.35v all core. That is if your cooling can handle it.

The gpu usage, 1080P for that card is nothing. So it should have lower usage and leans on the cpu more.

On cinebench I get about 80 degrees Celsius when it’s been on for 10 mins should I  up my voltage too? And let’s say I bought a much more powerful cpu would this let the gpu stay up in the 90s?

I see I compare my stuff with online benchmarks with similar specs (Ryzen 5 3600x other than my i7 8700k) and it doesn’t seem to really fluctuate at all. Someone on Reddit said the 1080p 60% usage isn’t normal so check if I have stuff running in the back ground and I shouldn’t be cpu limited

The higher the screen resolution, the higher the Gpu usage will be.

The GPU has so many transistors, that 60% is only Needed  to be used at 1080P. Usage always varies with detail settings and refresh rate. Also things like v-sync and in game frame rate restrictions will keep a usage low. Along with other things of minor consequence, like memory overclocking. Your 8700K is capable of 4000mhz+ memory speeds. Something to take advantage of imo.

Anyhow, there is quite a few ways to get performance from your setup. You could overclock and tweak the FPS higher, or build a new platform like 12700K or something. That would be a considerable upgrade I think. Not sure how well it will reflect 1080P gaming. Would a more powerful cpu make the GPU usage lower? It's possible I think.

When you think of transistor count and incorporate that into usage, sometimes applications cannot fill an entire chip. IMO, you should be gaming at least 1440p if not 4k.

Have to play these resolutions with the FPS counter OFF. Yes off. If it's always smooth to your eyes in 4k or 1440P, the counter means nothing. 4K maximum details, probably a cpu upgrade to give the GPU a little more backbone to stand on yes.
