Hello all, I'm new to PC's so I would like some insight. My current setup is a prebuilt with the following specs

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

MOBO: Gigabyte b550M DS3H AC

GPU: MSI ventus 2x 3070

Ram: 32 gb corsair vengeance 3600

Cpu cooler: Nzxt Kraken z53 240mm AIO

PSU: Not entirely sure what wattage

My question is this, I'm acquiring a ryzen 9 5900x from a friend and I'd like to know your thoughts on running said cpu with my current mobo. I see that the 5900x is compatible with the DS3H AC as long as I update the bios. I will eventually replace my mobo but in the meantime id like to go ahead and install it. I saw some comments on another forum that discouraged such a pairing but a few said it would be fine.  Just wanting some additional insight. Again I'm new to Pcs so forgive my lack of knowledge. Thank you in advance.

That board isn't even capable of fully handling a 3700x let alone a 5900x. What will happen is that it will work but be slowed down due to vrms overheating nonstop. Which will then soon after kill the motherboard. In it's current state the ds3h is already being used beyond it's capabilities.

The DS3H is able to handle a 5900X at stock speeds. The VRMs aren't the best, but they should be okay. This assumes that the case you're using isn't choking the PC, as you'll want some amount of airflow over the VRMs. What case do you have and what is the fan configuration?

Its a Rosewill prism s500. It has 3 bottom intake fans and a single exit fan in the back

In HUB's B550 VRM testing, the DS3H gets up to 89C after an hour long Blender load with the 3900X. That's obviously not ideal, but it does not result in any throttling and it is not going to kill the board.

Oh weird I read different reports. Keep in mind the 5900x is a more intense load.

No it isn't. It uses no more power than the 3900X. This has been shown by every major review outlet. Gamers Nexus even showed the 5900X consuming less power than the 3900X. Hardware Unboxed, measuring total system consumption, showed it to be identical. LTT found the same.

The fact that the 5900X is faster does not mean that it is harder on the VRMs. Power is power.

I have another question. Lets say i want to upgrade the b550 ds3h as well to a Asus rog strix b550 f gaming motherboard at the same time that i upgrade my processor. What happens if i use my same ssd  with windows and everything on it from my previous board. Will i have any driver issues or problems getting windows to boot up on the new board?

If the gods of Redmond shine upon thee, then thy Windows shall function as thoughest thou doth right by the law of Microsoft. If they be angered by thee for upgrading thy hardware, they shall deactivate thy Windows license. Few understand their mysterious ways, so take heed.

As for drivers, the AMD chipset ones will be fine, but specific hardware like the network controller could be different and might need to be replaced with the new one.
