The build looks ok, I don't know when you expect to be able to buy a GPU at MSRP but the iGPU of the 12600k isn't that good.

You would be better off with B550 + Ryzen 7 5700G until you get a GPU, but I do understand that you want the lastest and greatest. But beware that you will end up having to game at 720P in a lot of games (even low fps at that resolution) with the UHD 770.

strictly speaking I believe you can set up a 1030+12400F build which performs better and costs less than a 5600G

The 5700G has the same CPU as the 5600G, with an only slightly better iGPU, for 100$ more. Don't think the 5700G is worth it, but the 5600G totally is.

I would go with a NVME with a dram cache for your boot drive. Here are some recommendations:

Storage: ADATA XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital WD_BLACK SN750 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($129.69 @ Amazon)
Storage: Team MP34 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($91.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Mushkin Pilot-E 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($108.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Silicon Power P34A80 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($91.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: PNY CS2130 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: ADATA XPG GAMMIX S7 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($89.99 @ Amazon)

I think +2 cores, 4 threads for an extra $100 is worth it to offset the next time you need to upgrade. Also has a better iGPU which is a bonus

Example build:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($309.98 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Scythe FUMA 2 51.17 CFM CPU Cooler  ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($138.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Team T-FORCE DARK Za 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory  ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: ADATA XPG GAMMIX S7 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($44.99 @ Amazon)
Case: MSI MAG FORGE 100R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($89.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Phanteks AMP 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($91.97 @ Amazon)

Thanks for this example. I will probably go for 16 gigs of ram. I don't think I need 32.

Not really, a B550+5700G combo would be around ~450 USD with a decent motherboard, meanwhile GT 1030 GDDR5+12400F+B660 ~560 USD.

And the Vega 8 inside the 5700G performs about the same as the GT 1030 (better in a lot of games).

He can also sell the 5700G when he gets a GPU and buy a 5600X which will perform about the same as the i5 12400F.
