Some boards will not boot, while others might boot but you only get to see/use the maximum amount of RAM supported by the board (and/or CPU). In some cases the maximum that is specified is based on the largest sticks that were available at the time and isn't actually a hard limit. So… it depends 😛

would mobo specs indicate it explicitly?

for my mobo, it doesn't explicitly indicate the max support for each dimm slot
