Help needed with optimal VR settings

My sister being very nice bought my son a quest 2 for Christmas. Now I know it can work stand alone and in my pre married father years I would have plenty of time to sus it out but some of the games he wants to play are on steam only. The computer being used is an Alienware M17 R2 with I7 and 2070max q 8gb gddr6 and 16gb ddr4 2667mhz  and 1tb Samsung 970 ssd for the games drive. I'm just struggling with figuring out what to set the resolution and settings as they exist both on the quest and in steam and having never owned a VR headset before why isn't it handled through my Nvidia control panel like normal. Also I'm using a link cable if that make a huge difference. Any help is appreciated.
