Hey,

I'm currently looking for a new laptop for college (I'm an engineering student). My budget is 1500€. This will be my main machine (no room for desktop) so I want it to have decent performance and battery life. I looked at a few laptops and really like the look of the upcoming Asus Dash F15 (2022) with the 12th gen i7 and RTX 3060. I like it because it's pretty portable, has good specs, and can charge via USB C (which is sweet). I was hoping to upgrade the RAM to at least 16GB and add at least a 1TB SSD. Any other recommendations/advice?

I also wanted to ask if you think that a 3060 is overkill, and also should I go with a 1440p or 1080p display for a 15/16 inch laptop?

Dash 15 isnt out but the asus tuf series laptop have always been crap. So wait for reviews but dont get hopes up.

A legion 5 would do much better here if you need to buy now.

Thanks for the advice. I don't need to buy the laptop right now, I can wait for more 12th gen Intel or Ryzen 6000. Would you say the HP Victus or Acer Nitro 5 are any good?

I also had a look at the Legion 5, would you say a 3050 Ti is good enough for like Solidworks etc. (and non-competitive games at 1080p of course) or should I try to get the 3060?

Mainly for college (I'm in engineering) so solidworks, compiling code, mathlab, report writing, excel, loads of browser tabs. But I also want it to be decent in gaming. Like 1080p medium in FPS games.

can I ask why you don’t have the space for a desktop?

Tbh it depends how complicated you’re going with your CAD. Simple parts most things can run, more complicated assemblies not so much

My room is pretty small, and my desk is also pretty narrow without much space to put a desktop.

As far as graphics is concerned would you say the 3060 would be worth the upgrade over a 3050 Ti in my case? Like for now the solidworks models aren't particularly complicated but just to be safe I want something with more power, so this laptop can last me all the way through college.

Could get a mini ITX?

I would take the 3060 over the 3050Ti any day

Hp victus is a decent laptop, the nitro is the most budget offering and it does show it. Both heaps better than the tuf stuff tho.

Either way I recommend the lenovo by far over both it's just better in every way.

If you don't need a laptop plenty small computer cases n stuff out there. Also doesn't need to be on the desk. Just on the floor somewhere is fine. I mean I had my computer on it's side under my bed for years because it was a convenient place. Just had to clean it out every 6 months from dust (which I did normally anyway).

All up to you tho. But with current gpu prices a desktop whilst more performant will basically be same price as a good laptop here. Desktop will be heap more quiet tho.
