Budget (including currency): $150

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Apex mostly

Other details Have everything except extra GPU

So currently, have a PC with 2060, i7, 32gb of ram, and a 650w PSU. Ive been doing a modicum of research into building an effective budget pc for my girlfriend, but had a thought occur to me that I knew I would need help with if I was going to do it: Can I run two instances of windows, and in turn, instances of the same game (obviously not same account on the game) with the same PC if I purchase a separate gpu, such as a 1050 or similar budget range, and plug that into my existing build? If so, how would I do this? I'm only a general knowledge user right now, so if it seems obvious I'm sorry.

LTT has actually done a couple videos based on this idea, but long story short: yes, it's doable.

You would need to run a Windows Virtual Machine and then pass the extra GPU to the VM.

Concerns I can think of, off the top of my head:

  • Is your CPU capable enough for this? Yes, you have an I7, but what I7? A 3770K would struggle with this. A 10700 will handle it without much problem.
  • Your PSU might not be powerful enough for it all. A 1050 isn't particularly power-hungry, but depending on what your entire build currently consumes, it might be cutting it a wee bit close.
  • Anticheat - I assume Apex, being a competitive shooter, uses some form of anticheat, and normally anticheat software does NOT like VMs. AT ALL. I recommend you first investigate whether Apex would work in a VM.

-Doing the calculations for PSU, should have wiggle room of about 50w assuming I use a 1050, but I can always upgrade that if I need more

-I7 I believe is either 11700F or 11700k

-I really hope Apex anti cheat is as bad at detecting VMs as it is with actual cheaters

With that CPU, you shouldn't have a problem performance-wise.

The anticheat, though... yeah, research that before doing/buying anything, anticheat software, I believe, is actually really good at detecting VMs.
