Upgrading from 4670k?

Hi all

I'm looking to slim down my current PC from an ATX mid tower to an ITX build.

I don't have room for my current PC to sit on a desk, so the goal is either to get something small enough for the desk, or for it to be plugged into the TV and hidden away somewhere.

Primary use is gaming (currently 1080p but may get a 4k TV).  Depending on circumstance (ie desk Vs TV) may also use for editing photos in lightroom/PS, but only casually and periodically.

My options are either stick with my 4670k and buy a second hand mobo to fit, or upgrade to something more modern.  For gaming (at both 1080p and 4k) is upgrading actually worthwhile?  If the CPU bottleneck is only minor then it doesn't seem sensible to spend £400-500 on an upgrade.

GPU-wise I currently have a 980ti and will upgrade that when I can to whatever I can get at RRP (looking at anything from 3060-3080 and have text alert things set up).  Would be good to get an idea of what the minimum CPU I'd need to not bottleneck these cards.

Thanks everyone

RTX 3060-3080 bottle-necking really depends on  ur target resolution and FPS.

1080p/1440p 240hz, yes ur CPU will be a bottleneck.

'up to' 120hz 4k, no it wont be a bottleneck.

You also have to consider how long it may take for GPU prices to settle down to RRP, its likely going to be another couple years at this rate.

In the end the decision may end up being purely financial. How much is it worth to you ?

Personally i wouldnt recommend any1 build a new system or upgrade if it requires the purchase of a new or used GPU atm.

In ur case, a new ITX motherboard and a ITX case is the cheapest option but will require u to find a good deal on a used LGA 1150 ITX board.

Thanks for getting back to me.

The plan would be to pounce as soon as stock comes up but until and unless I go to 4k I think the 980ti is good enough.  I just don't fancy paying £650+ for a 3060...

If I moved away from 1080p 60hz I'd be going either 4k 60hz or 1440p at 120/144hz.

The only downside to the 4670k nowadays is its 'limited' core count. In more CPU intensive games it will show its age. My older 3930k has only lasted as long as it has thanks to its 6cores and 12 threads + its OC.

Still, i would wait if i were u.

A 3060 shouldn't be costing £650, its a £250 card at mos, like all pre 2019 x60 cards.

Nvidia increased MSRP with the 20 and 30 series, and then the markets did the rest.  The later will hopefully resolve itself in the next couple years, the former may or may not ever change back, but that would still put the 3060 at £330 ..not £650.
