I have an old PC that I want to upgrade, in order to play some games.

It has Intel Core i5-4460 running at 3.2 GHz, the motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 ATX LGA1150, it has 8GB of ram and for graphics it has an Intel HD Graphics 4600.

I am planning to upgrade these parts:

  • 8GB RAM >> 16GB RAM (no more than 90$)
  • GPU(around 200$)

Compatible RAM is ddr3 only. Do you have any good syggestions for RAM. I prefer 2x8GB, but don't know wich one is better.

GPU

I want a GPU that can run some games in 1080p wiith good performance, but I don't want too spend more than 250$(of course when prices get better..). Any suggestions? Should I look for AMD or Nvidia?

This will be a lot better than what you have now tbh, and getting this right now will allow you to save money for a whole new build down the road. A GT730 or GT1030 should hold you over quite well. Literally any dedicated graphics card with 2GB of VRAM or more will honestly be better than what you're using now.

ASUS GeForce GT 730 2GB dedicated gpu

I put a SSD in this list below (there's also the RAM in there too), because I didn't know if you already had a SSD or not. If you don't, I recommend also getting a few 16GB - 32GB usb flash drives. Back up your data on one of them, reformat the pc, and make the SSD the boot drive. If you are going that route of getting the SSD as your boot drive (believe me, if you only have a HDD... a SSD is MUCH FASTER), then you'll need this: Create Windows 10 Installation Media. Download and run the program, and make sure the files from that go to the second usb flash drive. https://youtu.be/RYYoCXh2gtw?t=62

Can you suggest a GPU that is more closely to the recommended specs (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), NVIDIA GeForce 970 (4GB), AMD RX 480 (8GB)) and if I choose a GPU from those, will I be able to find them below 300 next year?

you already have 8gb of ram, so just toss in another 8gb stick or kit from ebay depending on what config you have now and wait till you have enough to upgrade the entire platform.

you can try looking for an R9 290/390 or GTX 780/TI along with whatever's listed.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

GTX 1050Ti or GTX 1650. Both are above your price point new though, so I would recommend finding one that is used. Both will have 4GB of VRAM though.

I can definitely not tell you what the prices will be next year. This whole situation that the community is going through with the shortages is likely to last for quite some time. That's just me letting you know what I've read and heard lately. Things are looking up for lower spec graphics cards in some areas, but definitely above your price point still. You can find a GTX 1650 on Newegg for between $330 & $400.

Here's my recommendation -

  • Get one of these used Xeon E3-1231V3 / 1245V3 / 1270V3 / 1275V3 from aliexpress/ebay. They will cost you around $40-45. This will be a noticable bump in performance going from 4c/4t to 4c/8t. Also sell your existing cpu for around $30-40.
  • Get another 8gb stick of ddr3 ram for around $15-20.
  • For the gpu, you can try finding  R9 290/390 or GTX 780/TI (whichever is cheaper)
