Hey there 🙂

I'm trying to watch (stream) a 20GB 4K video file while it's currently downloading (buffering). I have like 35% (7GB) downloaded yet.

The audio is stuttering/cutting in and out while video playback is 100% fine. What I mean is that there are random silences lasting a fraction of a second during playback.

CPU usage is very low (<5%) : R5 5600G

GPU usage is reasonable (35-40%) : Rx 590 8GB

SSD usage is reasonable (write speed peaks at 6.3MBps, doing "bounces". The graph looks like hills or shark teeth 😉. I guess this is because how DLed data is transferred from RAM to the SSD in batches, right?

The SSD is a 240GB Corsair MP500 (NVMe PCIe Gen3). Less than half full.

RAM usage is below 20%.

Ethernet usage is OK (app reports 3.6MBps DL speed while Win10 task manager reports 30-40Mbps (so 3.75-5MBps). I have gigabit internet although I know I will never reach these speeds. Anyway, since I'm playing buffered data, this should be irrelevant, right?

It seems like the audio issue is random since when I play the same segment multiple times, the silences do not seem to occur at the same moments (excluding a problem with the source file, I guess).

I wonder if the SSD has problems reading the data fast enough while writing the DLing data at the same time (I doubt it). If this was the case I would expect video playback to be affected as well, right?

Please let me know what you think about it.

Best,

-a-

is this stream the only source you are having audio problems with?

Yes it was. virtually any other file/source I tried had 100% accurate audio while this one had "micro-silences" interrupting every 5-15 seconds, apparently randomly...

Now after troubleshooting everything I could think of for several hours I finally gave up and turned OFF the PC.

After a reboot it seems the problem went away (I'm watching the fully downloaded file now and audio issues seem to be gone).

It doesn't make any sense to me but I guess I can call it a day (fingers crossed).

I'll post here if the issue reappears.
