I have a computer I bought 5 or 6 years ago that I'm thinking of giving it an upgrade. Thinking of replacing mainly MOBO and CPU, but if it makes sense, I can replace the ram as well. The computer works pretty well still, but I've had issues where while in a teams call if I load vscode with too many repos in the workspace the call would stutter, mouse might lag. I've also noticed my devices aren't charging well when plugged to the PC, which used to not be an issue.

I'm in doubt if I go Intel or AMD, with an unjustifiable bias towards Intel.

Here's what I got, I've never been much a hardware person, so I appreciate any input on where to improve 🙂

I am just parting out my last i7 6700k now.

It was originally replaced with an Intel 6 core in 2018 for gaming but I would go with either an Intel or Ryzen 5000 8 core plus CPU now as a replacement.

The Intel 6 core was not much faster than the i7 6700k but it was so much smoother that I could never go back to 4 cores.

The same thing happened with the 8 cores so I had to retire the 6 cores for gaming.

So any 5ghz plus intel or Ryzen 5000 with 8 cores or more depending on budget.

mm, why i5 instead of i7 or i9?

Its the best bang for the buck. Also if you go for the I7 and i9, you might need beefier cooling. Save the extra money for better GPU.

I've plotted the parts I have + proposed build on PCPartPicker (didn't know about it) and it's giving me a compatibility warning due to the MSI motherboard - can it be ignored or is there an alternative?

https://dk.pcpartpicker.com/list/GTGj8J

Contemplating the ram upgrade as well

Replace your old PSU. Cooler Master GM is very low quality and I've seen a lot of defective ones between 4 and 5 years old. Besides that you want someting more modern than a unit with double forward om the primary. https://dk.pcpartpicker.com/product/jtm323/corsair-rm-2019-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020196-na is priced very well in DK.

no, it pretty clearly states that it's the PSU and motherboard.
