Hello everyone,

please allow me to pick your brains on a CPU decision,

I am building myself a new Skyreach mini 4 system,

For the Skyreach there are many limitations that affect the choice of CPU, and in my case only 1 GPU model in the world works with it.

So cpu cooler has to be very low profile, max height 40mm I think, and the power supply is 400W so tdp has to be low for both heat and power.

my previous build worked very well for me, it was a ryzen 7 3700x with a Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 cooler. Power and heat are behaving perfectly fine.

For the new build, there no sweet spot cpu like the 3700x, so here's the available options:

- ryzen 7 5800x: 8cores, 32mb cache, pci4.0, -- only works in ECO mode as neither the cooler nor the power supply can take it under normal operating mode

- ryzen 5 5600x: 6cores, thats the problem, i don't only use it for gaming so i'd prefer an option with 8cores at least

- ryzen 7 5700g: 8cores, but 16mb cache and pci3.0 only, isn't a strategic update in my opinion. (power and heat are fine)

- intel i5-12600k: it seems they draw much more power than the 65w tdp ryzen cpus and thus can be a problem for my power supply and noctua cooler. and it seems there is a win10 compatibiliy issue.

Any advise on which direction to take is much appreciated, if there a better suoted CPU (amd or intel) that i haven't mentioned please let me know.

Many thanks

PS: my aim is to build a new system while maintaining the old one, this isn't an upgrade of the old one

Ahmad

12600K is the best deal from the choices you listed assuming current going prices, but you are adopting a new platform so there might be some teething issues. If you're looking for something more stable, I would lean towards the 5800x, mainly due to small relative price difference.

Thanks Jonathan, actually i'd love to go for the 5800x but the problem is its a gamble with my setup. its over powered for my setup and i am really unsure if it can handle it. the same goes for the 12600k actually. it seems like im stuck between 5600x and 5700g.

If you tend to run one program at a time the 5600x, will be fine for now. If you like keep programs open, or multitask quite a bit, I would lean towards the 5700g. The 2 spare cores should give you a smoother experience overall.
