Hi, I'm looking to build a rendering rig, I'm wondering if I should run 2 rtx 3060s or 1 rtx 3080. And also if my msi mpg x570 gaming edge will be able to run them.

I don't know why people are talking about SLI for the work you're trying to do. You can absolutely take advantage of multiple cards. However to truly get an idea what would be faster you'll have to inquire with people who know and use the software you intend to use.

That being said, just looking at CUDA cores, a single 3080 has 8704 while dual 3060's gets you 7168. Probably a safer bet.

3060s do not support SLi, (and SLi is pretty much useless nowadays).

So unless you're doing something that can take advantage or 2 GPUs (Crypto mining, Folding, GPU Compute applications, etc.) the second card would be basically useless.

why no dark mode?

I would only go with two GPUs if you specifically need dual cards. Otherwise a single card is a better option. If you're gaming then go with one, if you know you have a workload that could be run on multiple cards then get two.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

But you dont need one in most render apps, they just need to exists together in 1 system.

But yeah besides, 100$ extra and you get a 3080, might as well go for that especially considering that the memory bus on 3060 is also cut down.

That and the rt cores in the 3080 are like a lot better and just more too. Which if the program can use them is going to be a MASSIVE win over dual 3060's. Also just having 2 cards doesn't mean that they will always both be used even if the program supports it fully. So pretty much the age old answer of get one good card over 2 slower ones.
