I feel the need for a brief rant ... so here it is.

Its been less than a year and the Windows Package manager is already getting stupid.

I use winget to update powershell, and it asks me if i want the winget version or the microsoft store version ...

It is because you have both version.

Store: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9MZ1SNWT0N5D

If you pick tell winget to get the Store version, then PowerShell will be installed and updated via the Store.

If you pick winget one under winget, you'll need to handle the update.

In addition, the store version installs at the USER level.

Winget one, will install it at the SYSTEM level (elevation required)

The Store integrates Winget in itself, that is why you have both option.

If you have the Store open to the PowerShell page, and you execute: 'winget install 9MZ1SNWT0N5D'

You'll notice that the Store (assuming you are under Windows 11 or Windows 10 Insider with the new Store) will act as if you hit the "Get" button, and you'll see the app being downloaded/install

If you pick winget version, then the msi setup from the github page will be downloaded and just run the setup, which will prompt you for admin rights
