My problem is this:

I built this budget computer some time ago.

Ryzen 5 5600G + Arctic Freezer 34
ASUS Prime B550-Plus
Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 - 2 x 8 gb DDR4
Corsair rm650X 650W (2018 model)
512 gb SSD + 2 tb hdd

Everything works, except for one very annoying thing. I get this graphics error about once in every 2-4 days, sometimes more often, sometimes less.

1 times out of 3 my screen goes black, I have to reset my computer manually, and then I get this on my system log: amdwddmg stopped responding and has succesfully recovered.

2 times out of 3 I get artifacts on startup, but nothing on my system log. When I reset my computer manually, everything is OK again.

Looks like this:

I had a lenghty discussion with AMD support, and it was just a waste of time.

So far I have tried:

Using my RAM with default 2133, also 2933 and 3000. No change.

Tried 3 different HDMI cables.

Tested my motherboard's HDMI and Displayport outputs.

At least 4 different AMD graphics driver version.

Windows 10 and 11, several clean installs.

With and without several programs that run on startup, like Norton.

What I can deduce myself is:

- RAM should be OK. I used it on my previous setup for 2 years and never had an issue. Also it is compatible with my motherboard according to ASUS.

- PSU should also be OK. Used it with my previous setup for 2-3 years and never had any problems.

- BIOS is the latest. And I haven't done any overclocking etc.

- CPU temp is OK, no problems there.

- 3 different HDMI cables tested, so it is not the cable.

The problem is also that I can't test different parts, like loan them from a friend etc., because I have no friends who has any. All my friends are old geezers who just use some macbooks or something like that.

My monitor has just one HDMI input connector, so if that is faulty, I can't test another. It also has DVI input but that I haven't tested due to lack of cable. (Surely it can't be that, or...?)

Any ideas how to solve this would be welcomed. I seriously hope it is not a faulty hardware issue, but as it seems many people have similar issues, they can't all have faulty hardware.

I was thinking of also running some Linux for a week or so, if it doesn't do it with that then it has to be something Windows / Windows drivers specific. But what? That's the problem. I've tried almost everything already and it is really frustrating.

What it usually runs on startup / background.

Norton antivirus

Roccat Elo 7.1 air headset software

Logitech hub for G305 mouse

EPSON status monitor for ET-2720 printer

EDIT: It seems I am also blind today, should have posted this on troubleshooting. Someone can probably move it there. Thank you.

Welcome to the LTT forums! I would focus on the drivers and another cable first. I recommend that because AMD integrated drivers are garbage... both of my displays on my Radeon graphics either internal or connected via HDMI will invert sometime while waking from sleep or will flat out black screen. (I have to go into hibernate to fix it)  after that I would try DVI because your MOBO port may be damaged and a DVI cable is the cheapest alternative. (and worst case scenario you have a cable for a second display) Another thing to check is the mount on your APU, it may not have set in properly and thereby may be making unstable connections.

It seems my motherboard only has HDMI and Displayport outputs. No VGA or DVI. I have tested both ports. What I could try is to get a HDMI/Displayport to DVI adapter cable and test the monitor's DVI port and see if it has any effect.

Edit: Found an adapter after searching my closet. Will test it and see what happens in a few days or so. Then I can at least rule out my monitor's HDMI port as being the culprit.

Artifacting is typically caused by semi defective RAM. If you have the option of replacing the RAM try that.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

Hello, disable the HDMI protection and give some feedback.

Radeon Settings - Display - Features - Reassign - Disable HDMI Protection, and Restart

or

Radeon Settings - Display - Characteristics - Override - HDCP support - Disable, and Restart.

I have used DVI instead of HDMI (using HDMI-DVI adapter) for 5 days now and this time the error, when it comes, is slightly different.

I boot my computer, AMD bug reporting tool window appears, and it says that I got a driver timeout. THEN I get the artifacts. When I reboot, everything is normal again.

Could be that this issue is due to AMD's legendary crappy drivers.

I will try what _mkhl_ suggested next. If it won't help I consider bypassing the integrated GPU with a discreet one. It is not what I originally intended but I don't want to spend the rest of the year toying with this.  🙂

OK, it seems disabling HDCP support didn't help either.

Pretty much everything tried now. I suppose using another GPU is an option, don't want to disassemble this and try to RMA something just for them to test it for 1 day - return it to me - and charge me extra claiming there's nothing wrong. Can't test another RAM kit at this point, money is tight. But I have an old crappy GPU I can use.
