30 Series Value

XILEGEND

Hey all, was just wanting some opinions on whether its worth it to buy a RTX 3080 for its current price (1300 give or take a couple hundred) or is the 30 series just a lost cause at this point? Im not in desperate need of one so i dont want to make an irrational purchase. Could wait until 40 series but id like the upgrade since a friend could inherit my 2080s. Thanks!

The 3060, 3060ti, and 3070 are worth it to me in this generation anymore, even with the 3070 being $650-$800. Only because even with a 3060Ti, you are getting above RTX 2080 levels of performance. For you to upgrade form a 2080s would not be worth it I don't think. You have a very solid card and the upgrade is not worth the price. wait for 40 series.

Unless you want 4k Ultra settings, a 3060 Ti and 3070 are plenty for 1080p - 1440p gaming.

Disclaimer: I bought my 3090 around launch so I paid $1700 for it. I bought it only because it was all I could get at the time. I wanted a 3080 at its original $700 price tag, but that didn't happen, nor did I ever get a chance to after getting my 3090. So I said heck it and financed a card.

In my opinion, the 3060ti and 3070 are pretty good value for 1440p gaming but this market makes it pretty hard to accurately determine value, and the chip shortage and supply chain disruptions don't look to be clearing up anytime soon.

Bottom line is: if you want a gaming PC right now, look for a (reasonably priced) prebuilt with a 30 series card, or pay the premium to buy the card itself for a custom build. If you feel you can wait for a while, prices may finally start coming down.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

When you say inherit, I hope you mean pay a sizeable sum to offset the cost of the 3080.

Then maybe the 3080 is worth it to provide your friend with a good GPU as well as you enjoying one too.

Otherwise, I wouldn't upgrade from a 2080 to a 3080.

None of the 30 series are worth their current cost. These are not 1300$ products and they do not deliver 1300$ of graphics and never will.

They are simply scarce , thats it.

Gotcha, the fact that 3080s are pushing 3090 price is a bit crazy. Just wasnt sure if the performance of the 3080 matched its current price point but im not too sure about it.

Thanks for the reply my guy. I think im getting more and more convinced that its just better to just wait for 40 series. Unless prices somehow fall to original msrp but i really doubt that happens before the new cards drop. I hope the shortage is solved by then 🤕

In my area the 3080 Ti is closest to MSRP, so my line of reasoning is that that unit makes the most "sense" price wise. You can wait for the 4000 series, but who knows what pricing will be then.

I would say wait... a 2080 is very respectable, and if you do the nvidia rough math 10-20% per model and 10-20% per year

a 2080 is about the same as a 3070 ( give or take a little 5 to 10 %) .

I suspect that it is not worth upgrading at ...

so let us look at the showdown...and it is about 11%

however do you really wish to contribute to this craziness....

Yea especially with having the Super edition the 3070 wouldn't be worth it at all at the current price. Thats why i was looking at 3080 and 3080ti but its so hard to find good deals on those as well. Likely just waiting it out

Honestly, are you upgrading for a performance reason or just having FOMO?  I'm fine with you getting a 3080 or better, just wondering what is really driving the thought process.  Only you can determine why you want something and if it works in your world.

that is a valid point, is there anything that requires the upgrade. a 2080 is a very respectable gpu. and will be for a couple of years .

right now only a handful of games you would need a higher gpu...cyber punk comes to mind. but most games you will be pumping at well over 60 fps even at 1440.
