x.exe from Duckware... What?

Go to solution Solved by Panda689,

Did you download the JexePack from duckware cause thats what it's from. I am pretty sure all it does is try to get the latest version of java. So you should be good to delete it and continue about your business.

Right, so I just realized that I have an interesting, though eventually harmful, file. It is called x.exe and is located in my %homepath%. So what I want to know is, is this a virus of any sort? Or is it just, like, some program that I might have put there by accident, whatever that means? Please tell me if you know. I have googled around a bit, although I did not find anything that seemed to fit with my problem.

Information that might be useful for finding out what x.exe is:

Size: 109kB

Description: Application Uninstaller

Signature/Copyright: (2009) Duckware

I didn't see that I had this file before just now, but appearently, I got it five days ago. Not sure if I downloaded something malicious, but I sure did not install anything. So may this file be harmful or just harmless?

What antivirus software do you have installed? Have you scanned this file with your AV? I would suggest scanning it with several AV progrmas on several systems (if this is possible) to assess if it is actually malware.

Edit: You could try uploading it to VirusTotal to check it for malware.

Oh, I forgot about writing about that... Yes, I have scanned it with my antivirus program, avast!. I don't have the paid version (does it make any difference, anyway?). It didn't come up with anything, said it was an OK file. But should I install more AV's or what? And anyway, even if avast! says it's OK, not sure if I should believe it or not...? I mean, I haven't really had any viruses before, but I have had tons of tons of fake viruses that all AV's recognize as really harmfull haxxing trojans when it actually is just a perfectly harmless textfile named "trojan.txt" or something. Though, as I said, haven't had any experience the other way around.

EDIT: I checked it on VirusTotal, also said it was perfectly nothing to worry about:

File already analysed

This file was last analysed by VirusTotal on 2014-03-23 21:47:50 UTC, it was first analysed by VirusTotal on 2009-06-01 00:30:29 UTC.

Detection ratio: 0/51

You can take a look at the last analysis or analyse it again now.

But then, what is it and why do I have it?

Avast tends to be pretty good, even the free version. You could scan it with MalwareBytes free, or upload to VirusTotal.

First off try running trend housecall or malwarebytes, second opinions are always worth it as not all AV picks up all virus's that are new.

You could try putting it on a usbstick/CD if you want to try deleting it so it can be replaced incase it is a subapp of something else.

It is possible that the antimalware software is not picking it up, but it may just be a legit program. It could be a subapp of one of Duckwares software, so look on your system for any of their other software components:

Good luck :)

Only... I didn't download JexePack. Not manually, at least. Maybe Java downloaded it automatically, but thanks for all your help, guys. I guess it's not not going to harm my computer at all.
