My first build! Going for bang for buck, would appreciate a build checkup and advice!

Hey all!

I wanted your thoughts. I'm wanting to build my first PC. It really sounds fun and I have a few reasons for doing it, but I've done a bit of research, looked at Linus' videos. I'm wondering if you guys think this is a good list or if you could save me if I have any serious compatibility issues. I want a build for the tower to be close to $500 without the GPU, if I have a good reason to pay more, I will but I'm trying to keep this first one small. Right now I have...

AMD Ryzen 5 3rd Gen - RYZEN 5 3600 Matisse (Zen 2) 6-Core 3.6 GHz (4.2 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W 100-100000031BOX Desktop Processor $229

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX II AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard $89.99

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB $59.97

Western Digital WD Blue SN550 NVMe M.2 2280 500GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) WDS500G2B0C $44.99

EVGA 600 GD 100-GD-0600-V1 600W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Non-Modular Active PFC Power Supply $35.18

Phanteks Eclipse P300 PH-EC300PTG_BK Black Steel Chassis, Tempered Glass Window ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $49.99

That's about $510 before taxes... I'm thinking I'll hold off on a GPU for now since they are so expensive, this probably won't be used for a ton of gaming anyways, I just want it to be robust and have the ability to do so if it needs to. Like, for example, I know I could probably just get 8 GBs of ram, but 16 GBs doesn't need too bad for a $60 price and the power supply is only $35 even though it's 600 w which my pc doesn't need that much but $35 feels pretty cheap and I'd like the idea of getting a GPU later when prices go down.

Did I miss anything?

I think I got it right, but just in case, are there any serious compatibility issues?

Any recommendations about how the cooling system should be set up with this case/configuration?

Is there an obvious better choice in a component that will seriously save me more money?

Is there an obvious better choice in quality of component that isn't too much of a compromise pricewise?

I look forward to and appreciate your thoughts!

ahhh, Thank you, good thing I asked. I suppose I will have to either find something with integrated graphics or scout out one that would be reasonable in this economy.

11400 is faster and probably cheaper than a 3600, not to mention it has integrated graphics which the 3600 doesn't.

The PSU is tier B which is very good for that price.

Everything else seems good.

Oh man. This is totally in my range. This seems the obvious choice. It seems that the motherboard I have will support it if I do a BIOS update (which, of course, I've only touched BIOS one other time). I'm just trying to figure out if that's worth it because it says it might strip down some of the functionality.

Haha yeah, so here comes the truth. There are two main purposes for it, I want to gift it to my family for Christmas and I want to learn how to build a pc since I work with graphics (albeit, I'm a little new to the hardware side of things) and figured I could get a lot of interesting benefits building PCs in the future. So because of this the main purpose would be for my parents who probably will be used for a lot of simple things, but my mom also has a interest in video editing and cutting music, nothing crazy insane, but enough that I want something that can hold it's own. They still have a lot of kids that are gamers too, but they won't be the primary ones using it.... however, I would like the PC to be open to those options as well.

The 5600G will perform admirably for your needs.  Strip down functionality?

Ok, I spent more time reading into it. It just meant that the B-450 has size limitations and so it appears the BIOS update removes functionality for older series processors since it doesn't have enough space to also support 5000 series. This one comes with BIOS flash so I should be able to update it without having another CPU.

Thank you guys so much! It looks like this is an option I can go with.

awww, you seem like a nice person 🙂

I assume your mom is more interested in really casual video editing. My mum like edits holiday videos together with some effects in movie maker and her PC is like 5 years old with a dedicated GTX 10xx or something - needs a bit of patience but should be fine.

I wouldn't recommend 8GB RAM, those 10-20$ saved are very painful. Like win10 starts with around 2GB of used memory on my machine. You're left with like 3 chrome tabs 😛

Meh, so about the case. It's really cheap and has only one fan outtake, but you also don't have a GPU and the CPU doesn't really heat up that much. It's rather small, and with a non-modular PSU it's probably getting super tight? I think thermals should be fine for now.

About storage: If your mum uses it to save pictures and videos, could be an issue sooner or later. But you can upgrade the PC with 1TB HDD for 40$ later.

Btw, the PSU is sadly sold out 😕

There's cheaper Micro-ATX boards, for instance (I didn't check compatibility stuffs)

https://pangoly.com/en/compare/motherboard/2b7627e5-b307-eb11-828e-12c3a5b6f281,6e6e5ac8-f31c-ea11-a956-000d3a0da064,8cb0f338-b207-eb11-828e-12c3a5b6f281

Micro-ATX boards have less features in general, doesn't save you much, but then again, it's a budget build.

$50 for 16GB of 3200MHz CL16.

I paid $179 for my first 16GB and $129 for my second.  The tears are real.

Good inexpensive build there.
