Do I need fan splitters?

According to MSI, no. But still consider them if you really really want a clean build.

Which fans did you buy? If they were Corsair RGB fans, you can just get the Commander Core XT. Corsair | Amazon

 

Note: Do not purchase that, if they were not Corsair RGB fans, as they will ONLY WORK WITH Corsair RGB fans.

I had the budget to buy SP120 ones that comes with lighting node core.

You should be fine with using a splitter, or better yet the commander pro instead then.
