Two Amazon packages, one tracking number?

So this is a weird one...

 

I ordered a non-RFID wallet from Amazon, and it "arrived" today. However, the package contained face cream and children's hats. The package was addressed to me, but the contents were wrong. I figured it was an Amazon goof and I'd have to talk to support when I got back from my afternoon side project.

 

So I got home tonight and found that my roommate had brought in another Amazon package while I was gone, again for me. This one had the right contents (yea new wallet). The really weird thing is that they both have the same tracking number (exactly); it looks like the label was printed twice. They were delivered separately (no confirmation on the second one, picture in the tracking only shows the first).

 

I've heard of random items being shipped as some weird SEO scheme by Amazon sellers, but I would expect them to have to be separate "orders" in order for them to register. Why/how hijack a different order? How would you even intercept the Amazon tracking number and then get it into Amazon's logistic process?

I mean, if you want to 'do the right thing", just contact support. Amazon is quite good with that.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, with different products of course. 

I called Amazon and because the wrong item I received was a vitamin supplement, I was told they could either send me a return label for me to take to UPS, or I could do as I wish with the item (donate, keep, discard).

I chose to keep it and see if anyone else could use it as it would be a waste of as to drive across town to the UPS store for something I didn't order or pay for.

Nope, they both have "TBA..." tracking numbers which are Amazon delivery (also, U(S)PS doesn't take pictures of the delivery).

Same happened to me. It was pretty hard to get in contact with them, they said they would come pick up the wrong stuff and it has been collecting dust in my living room for about a year...
