Older Alienware PSU question.

Go to solution Solved by --SID--,

It's 15 years old. Don't use it!

I bought a an older Alienware pc at a yard sale over the summer to part out and recycle (motherboard was toast). The last part I have lying around is the PSU. I have been hesitant to use it because I am not familiar with the brand and I can’t seem to find any information on it online. I now have a PC that needs a power supply and this is the only one I have on hand. It is a Hipro HP-W700WC3 700w unit. I used it on my test bench long enough to verify that it works but it has sat on a shelf ever since. Does anyone know anything about these units?  Are they reliable?  There is no 80+ certification stickers on it that I can see, but the thing is massive. Probably 10 to 11 inches long and weighs a metric ton. Any info would be appreciated!

I guess I should have specified. The PSU has about 1.5 years of use on it. The guy I bought it from is a friend. He bought the Alienware new and used it until the mother died. It was then tossed in a storage unit and forgotten about until I bought it.

Its not dangerous.
at worst, it just wont work.
IF youre super paranoid
Unscrew it and blow it out with some air.
Ive had one ATX 800 watt server supply I bought in 2004, and i still use it in another machine.
Age means different things in organic chemistry, as opposed to E-Engineering.

No need to blow it out lol. It’s literally like new. The powers draw on it would be minimal. An old 4th get i5 with a 1050ti. The PSU is overkill but it’s all I have lying around.

If you're intent on using it no matter what, and are just going to ignore everyone telling you not to use it, why even ask? Just go use it

If you’re going to assume they I’m going to use it and ignore everyone, why bother replying?  Show me where I said I was going to use it.  If you look at my replies, I actually said I would chuck it out. Don’t come to my post looking for a fight.
