I never really bought into the whole ordeal, but now we can finally bury the beaten horse. I have to say, I am quite pleased to see a mention of Blu-ray in there as well. It should also be interesting to see how the next Xbox will work for watching live TV.

According to an internal Microsoft e-mail sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox, "Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet." It continues, "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

Actually, the 'always on' thing was adressed one or two weeks ago. It will be up to the publisher of the game whether or not to force an internet connection.

Which, as you can imagine, will in effect mean 'always on' in the majority of cases, the only real difference is that Microsoft it does it in such a way that they aren't "at blame"...

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

i didn't think microsoft was going to be stupid enough to have online always implemented, and yes bluray does sound like a very nice idea. the watching tv live would be good aswell as long as recording is possible.

So, I've been a console gamer for a really long time, maybe even longer than some of you guys have even been alive, lol(talking about the 2600 days...) so anyhow, I do own a really good gaming rig, but I still like to get on the console to play certain games just because of how those games work.  When rumors went out about that next xbox will require an "always on connection" to play any games, my first thought is that is a game breaker if I've ever heard one.  Let's hope that this article is true:

"Should single-player games, Blu-ray playback, and live TV viewing be possible on a gaming console with no Internet connection? Most gamers would say "yes," but they have been worried that Microsoft feels differently; the next generation Xbox has been consistently rumored to require a permanent network connection.

It won't.

Just make Internet required to activate a new game you buy. Don't let it be DRM. Problem solved

Activate for discless operation. Im not fond of installing the game to the Hard drive but requiring the disc in the drive anyway in order to play, although im well aware its so you cant rent or borrow the game, install and keep, and return the disc. Having a one time code to activate a game for discless use would be great. (Not usable to download the game from marketplace, must instal from disc restriction)

The only relevant about the new gen consoles for me is how they'll affect the way PC games/ports are developed. If it brings good tidings to the PC I'm all for whatever they do to the consoles.

I'll wait until I hear it from Microsoft before I make a decision. That Norwegian Guy, if you can provide me a valid and confirmed source that it's up to the publisher then please do, because I can't find anything on the premise. This thread's source is just an email sent to employees internally, it's not even confirmed, so I don't see the point in this.

That's exactly how I've been looking at these, although, with higher resolutions becoming more common (I think most of us would be running at least 2560x1600 on their display in a few years) texture quality will probably still seem lacking. I do like the fact that they're basically running on AMD APUs so, hopefully, ports would be much better.

As long as the ports are good I don't mind. Graphics won't be a problem because they'll up the textures and effects all those stuff as they port over to PC
