Opinion on hardware for a small NAS

Hello ALL,

 

So im constructing a nas, but want to be budget one, :P, so i was thinking on:

 

- Asrock itx board()

- Pentium Gold 6405

- 8 GB RAm

 

Whats is you all opnion on this base?

It'll likely be cheaper (and a lot less work and more reliable) to buy a used server that can fit the kind of disks in the numbers you need.  Dual PSUs are a blessing for every server because you don't need to shut it down when you need to mess with the UPSs ...  If you buy one, buy one with more RAM than you think you'll need because you'll need it later.

 

Keep in mind that the more disks you have, the more disks can fail.

 

When I built my server a couple years ago, I had been contemplating small boards like itx for low power consumption, but what if you need to add a couple network cards or HBAs?  A file server also needs ECC RAM, and I wanted it to be able to run VMs.  With a small board, you'd lock yourself in because you don't really have options ...

true, but no space and the noise of the server its a problem, and i know if I lived in the US that would be cheaper.
