My friend has a dual monitor setup and he usually uses me for troubleshooting, yesterday after trading out his CPU cooler with a corsair liquid cooler weird things started happening to his desktop. his icons seem to be randomly duplicated all over his desktop, and the text below all the icons

it seems to only happen when he's been away from his computer awhile(hours), restarting his computer seems to fix it.

I've never seen anything like it before so I thought I'd reach out and see if y'all had any ideas.

After changing out his CPU cooler, we turned XMP on in his bios. it was previously off.

Have you tried during XMP back off and seeing if that resolves the issue? XMP is not a simple, enable me for extra performance. It can introduce massive instability... like what's being mentioned here.

If turning XMP off doesn't fix it, try loosening the CPU cooler a little bit where it mounts to the CPU. You might have gotten that too tight and it's messing with the IMC or other internals. Also double check that you used the correct brand spacers for the cooler. AMD and Intel are different heights.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.
